The one thing you have to hand Shiro is full marks for their decor. Massive standing buddha-like statues greet you on your way in and surround this sushi joint-cum-lounge at night. The lighting above the bar, appearing as if there were a thousand floating candles, is impressive. Beyond that, the vibe here was just missing. It didn't appear as if people were having fun - rather, it appeared as if people were there because they had to be seen at Shiro, at least once! The techno/house beats were soulful, but people didn't really know how to appreciate it. Crowd was a bit pretentious, and most people wanted to show off their goods, whether they had them or not. It's hard to knock a place for the vibes and the crowd's intentions, but I just can't find anyone else to blame. Some ways to improve Shiro might be to give it a dedicated dance floor; teach the service staff to smile; have the DJ speak to the audience a little more.
If you need to pretend to be someone else for one night, this is your place. Otherwise, for more real, energetic, and good 'ole fashioned fun, head to Hard Rock just down around the corner.
