Food is good, but...

With a lot of expectation I went to Zaranj the other day with my friend. Both of us were looking forward to our luncheon date and took the trouble of driving down from one corner of the city to the other just to have the lovely buffet of Zaranj that we both heard so much about - and that too when it was raining cats and dogs!

We reached around 2ish - ok we were late considering we were coming from so far off and that I was driving! The attendant at the gate took my car keys promising to park it - the board outside the entrance boasted of "Vallet Parking".

The restaurent was surprisingly empty. It could be because we were late, or could be because Kolkatans already knew what we were about to discover. We were the only two guests there. That didnt bother us initially, cos we were hungry and excited to start off our meal and adda...

The spread was so-so - I mean nothing extraordinary - Zaranj we all know is famous for their kebabs, but there was hardly any in the buffet... why? is it because they felt that customers should not be treated to their speciality for 388/ per head (thats the rate for buffet on the weekdays)!!! The food is not worth mentioning much. The chicken curry was the same I make at home! So was the daal. Palak corn was below ordinary. Tandoori chicken was the only thing i liked. Dahi mutton was different, but again, not upto the mark. They serve better dishes in alacarte'. The buffet had chinese and continental spread as well, but again, the quality was below the mark or the expectation we had from Zaranj. Then came the surprise - around 15 minutes to 3 - an attendant came and informed us that they would close their buffet by 3 so he requested us to take whatever we have to by then. Thats fair, but considering we were already towards the end, I think they could have waited, and whats more, before we could finish our lunch, they actually started closing their counter, and that was atleast 5 minutes to 3 if not more!

Food was not good, their behavior was uncalled for, and we vouched never to come back again. But the worst was yet to come...

After we came out and the attendant brought my car, we tipped him, because he helped us with parking as well as provided us with umbrellas since it was raining... but just as I started the ignition, there was a man asking for parking fee!!! Hello, I thought vallet parking meant free parking as well!!! I paid him, but made a mental note of never going back there - food is not all - the service is equally important - and they have disappointed me in both the areas...
