Mahesh Lunch Home is a food lovers paradise! Tucked away in a quiet corner of fort next to the legendary Yezdani Bakery and close to the Bombay Store, this little gem is well known for its Mangalorean dishes. This restaurant is most famed for its seafood dishes but vegetarians wont be disappointed either. The maitre d' comes and displays lobsters, crabs and prawns with great finesse at the tables and suggests preparations with each of them. It is a great way to show children what their food looks like before it is cooked! The staff are friendly and the service is reasonably prompt.
We ordered the solkadi as refreshments which was absolutely delectable. I didnt know what Kokum was so the maitre d asked someone to bring me some in a bowl to show me what it was- a lovely touch, I thought! The vegetarians amongst our group ordered tandoori mushrooms which were cooked to perfection. The grilled veggie starter was a bit of a damp squib with large chunks of potatoes and extra large florets of cauliflower. I had the fish tikka (made with Rawas) which was absolutely delectable! For the main course, we ordered prawn gassi and vegetable gassi with appams. Fabulous food and generous portions too. Since they didnt have fresh mango which we would have liked to have for dessert, we settled for caramel custard which reminded me of the comfort food we used to make in my childhood. A meal at Mahesh must be followed up with a magahi paan from the paanwala around the corner who tells a fabulous story about the paan he makes and makes the paan with a fine flourish!
