Event DetailsGurudev Rabindranath Tagore firmly believed in active protection of Nature to avoid the dangers of environmental disaster. He warned against felling of trees and started the Briksharopan (tree planting) festival. After his demise Santiniketan celebrates this festival coinciding with his Death Anniversary on 22nd Sraban / 9th August every year. During the Briksharopan, the mundane ritual of planting a sapling is endowed with Tagore's imagery. The sapling to be planted is carried in an ornate procession with the chanting of Sanshrit shlokas and songs specially written for this occasion. The five elements of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space bless the sapling. The Santiniketan Ashramik Association in Mumbai, which is the Alumni of Viswa Bharati, Santiniketan, will present Varshamangal, a soiree based on dance - song - recitation on the subject of Monsoon and Mother Nature (Monsoon Celebration), following the planting of a sapling (Briksharopan).
