Banana Leaf, Lake Market

Went for dinner tonight which happened to be a big let down. Had to wait for over half an hour for obvious reasons- pools baisakh weekend. Entire family was hungry but the dosa and uttapam served were sub-standard. Complaints about bland dosa, Masala and sticky uttapam earned no reactions from the man behind the counter. Instead he feigned ignorance and arrogance both. A disappointment altogether. Will not visit again.

The South Indian Super Hit!

Once and for all I had this doubt whether Kolkata really has a decent South Indian Restaurant, by decent I mean something of the highest order! Having lived in Chennai for over 5 years, the South Indian flavor has been an integral part of my life; however I would like to thank my Uncle who showed me the WAY! Banana leaf, as the name suggests, bear exemplary stampings of being an exceptional food joint serving delicious yet healthy South Indian food. A very decent get-up and ambiance coupled with brilliant recipes did wonders to my taste buds! The Cheese MASALA Dosa was OUT of the WORLD! The price, umm, it's on the higher side, but the quality matches it's quantitative measure! Looking forward to visit again!

Best South Indian Food

Banana Lead is one of the best place for SOuth Indian food in the city. The Special Thali is simply superb. Ideal for dining on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Simply Delicious

I've been a regular at banana leaf.... and can safely say that here you get great food at competitive prices.... the sunday thali is awesome...over 14 items in one meal........ my family prefers visiting on weekdays since saturdays and sundays is crowded....... good service....bit slow on sundays may be due to the crowd. Great Place if you're a foodie.

Great South Indian food! All of the positive reviews below are correct - great food at a good price. We've eaten there many times and every meal has been a delight.

A gastronomic south indian adventure

Sumptuous, value for money food. Apt and prompt service. Clean and hygienic ambiance. Authentic south indian cuisine.

My experience was simply sinfully blissful.

Am a regular at Banana Leaf ... and in my voyage for myriad south indian food experiences, I haven't come across a better joint for South Indian Cuisine. Chutney's not being served in buckets - thankfully :).

In my visits to the restaurant, I have loved the regular bite. Amazing super soft idlis which I love having with molgapodi, crisp vadas, typical south indian style aptly crisp dosas and the Uttapams - the Indian reply to the Italian Pizza.

Besides the regular, at Banana Leaf, I have discovered and especially love the Parotha Kurma - a south indian version of the north indian laccha paratha and subzi, south indian chilli (soaked in salt water and dried under the sun), the king's feast - the South Indian Meal on Sunday's, Kesari, Kuzhi Paniyaram ... and what name you.

I highly recommend a visit - and assure you - you'll love coming back.

Food as it is supposed to be - Delicious!

I first ate in Banana Leaf (BL) when I came to Calcutta to visit an uncle. Being a South Indian, I know my idli, vada and dosas pretty well, so I was surprised when my uncle suggested we eat at Banana Leaf. That turned out to be a sheer culinary experience. The vadas were crisp and golden brown without a hint of oil.
The buttermilk served in BL is to die for and I truly attained nirvana during the hot summer months in Calcutta. The rava dosa served in BL will give competition to any South Indian mami -- mouthwatering.
A wonderful eating experience, I recommend this restaurant as a "go to place" when you are in Calcutta.

Poor Hygiene, arrogant staff, tasteless food

The quality of food can be compared to that of any dirty street side joint in central Kolkata. The food quality is also very low and they cook in the most unhygenic conditions. The service here is also very poor.

Authentic South Indian near my house!

I'm a frequent visitor to this Restaurant. Well, I like the onion Ravaa Dosa and the Masala Dosa of theirs and The Sada Uttapam. They serve well and the staff is well spoken. Its really good place to take your whole family for South Indian Lunch or Dinner. Every penny worth the food.

Damages--Rs.550 for 6 people(including desserts).

Wholesome and genuine

South Indian Lunch House ambience. It is worth bearing in mind that the prices are unbelievable because it covers only the authentic South Indian food and does not stretch to fit in gala ambience nor five-star service.
