  • The Cafe Calls! Jun 08, 2013

My mom must have been a Tamil in her past life. She can have dosas day and night, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When she doesn't eat a dosa for a fortnight, she gets withdrawal symptoms! Thank God we live so close to Matunga. I have lost count of the number of times we have been to this place and have tried almost every single dish on the menu.

The place has a cult status, like a lot of other places in this vicinity. That is why till date there hasn't been a single day when we have managed to get in without a mandatory 20 minute waiting :) Good thing the outside area has some chairs

  • Paradise for South Indian Food Lovers !!! May 10, 2013

Fresh, fluffy idlis, even fluffier set dosas served with white butter, and steaming filter coffee served in steel bowls are part of the allure. Special stuff also includes: Madras Dahi Missal & Pineapple Sheera. Dont miss it. Rasam is an exquisite part of their menu and is must have. You wont get rasam joints in Mumbai. If only they served chawal (rice) with it.The service is nice. However if you are planning to come here for breakfast, or on weekends or holidays, be prepared to stand out in the waiting line. Also, if you are not four people than be ready to share your seats too in rush hours.... read more

The place where Café Madras is located, Matunga, is known for its temples, mostly South Indian, which are scattered along the criss-cross roads. So also it is renowned for its hotels / restaurants serving authentic South Indian delicacies.

As you walk down from Ruia College towards King Circle via Matunga Station, you come across a famous restaurant every few minutes. Starting from Mani’s Lunch Home, DP’s, Sharda Bhavan, Ram Ashray, Amba Bhavan, Café Madras, Café Mysore and Anand Bhavan.

Welcome to another Temple of South Indian Food.

  • Suppa filter kaapi! Apr 19, 2013

If its filter coffee, its got to be Cafe Madras! Superb refreshing coffee served with a smile. Unlike its neighbours in the vicinity, this place is open till 10.30pm making it a perfect hangout post an early dinner. Haven't really tried all the items on its menu as its always been coffee for me. However, last night we tried their Idli butter pudi (as suggested by the server) which was really good. Friendly people and the owners who do a good job of managing the ever increasing crowd and at the same time ensuring that you are comfortable. 3 cheers!

There is always a huge wait time to get into the restaurant.

On weekends sometimes the wait time goes over 45 minutes, still you find people waiting to get inside.

After the long wait to get in, you will be served well. The staff are helpful and guide you to make an informed choice.

I love the Masala Dosa here is excellent. Idli and wada are as usual top notch.

the service is quick and its a no nonsense type of udipi restaurant.

Most likely that you will be sharing your table with someone else due to accommodate the huge line of people waiting ou

Great place to have South Indian food. Butter Idli poodi and Butter dosa are must haves. Mad rush on weekends. Also, avoid if you are going on a date. You'll have to share tables.
