Very good

For vegetarians, its one of the best sizzlers you can have.

I ordered Veg sizzler with Szechwan Sauce & noddles. Also asked for extra Szechwan Sauce.

Veg Pizza :

Have it to believe it. It is the best fast food pizza I ever had. Trust me, u vegetarians will thank me after trying Kobe's Veg Pizza at the Bandra Hill road branch.

Spaghetti : Really nice.

From OK to No Way

Kobe's Sizzlers used to fantastic. Back in the day, over three years ago, when I lived in Bandra, Kobe's was a regular haunt for our group of friends. And two of us would always end up competing on who can actually finish that steak.

This weekend, with relatives in town, we decided to go out to eat. Since one of them is really into sizzlers, we made reservations at Kobe's. Should have gone to Yoko maybe, but we were going to be in Bandra anyway, and Kobe's was an old favourite.

Like I said, we should have made the effort.

A great many restaurants in Mumbai start to decline surprisingly fast. But Kobe's descent into pure hell was shocking even by Mumbai standards. Whether the quality of food, or the service - nothing is even close to what it used to be.

First off, I'd like someone to explain to me why the waiters here are so angry with you for daring to eat their food. They seem to resent diners, and the resentment is blatantly obvious. I actually had a waiter set down a glass of water on my table with a bang!

The menu is PRECISELY the same as it used to be, which is a pity - would innovation kill the management? In fact, I don't even think they've reprinted a menu, redecorated, or even cleaned the place thoroughly in the last three years - it looks old and run-down.

We ordered from the threadbare menus, which wasn't too hard since we pretty much know the selection inside out.

I'm normally a steak-only person at places like this, but when in India one avoids beef when with family. So I opted for the Lamb chops, while the rest busied themselves with Chicken sizzlers and a vegetarian sizzler.

The one great thing was that the food arrived within five minutes. Does make it obvious that they didn't COOK it for you specifically, but we all know how restaurants work, and the lack of the illusion of personal service is quite forgivable if the meal is quick AND good, especially when you're hungry.

But this meal was only quick.

My so-called Lamb Chops weren't lamb. They were mutton. I realize that mutton can derive from sheep OR goats. I don't know which this one came from - for reasons I'll get into in a second. But this wasn't Lamb. That much is for sure.

But to their credit, they didn't try to mislead us. Only the menu called it Lamb Chops. Even the waiter called it Mutton Chops.

Oh well, not that I hate Mutton Chops, so I wasn't too disappointed. Till I took a bite.

The first thing that struck me when the smoke cleared was the TOTAL lack of aroma. How they managed that, I'm still not sure. Not just on the mutton, but all the sizzlers.

The chicken sizzlers had a couple of sadly bereft pieces of chicken, and my Mutton chop had FAR FAR more bone than meat. And the reason I can't figure out if it was goat or sheep? Well, the only reason I knew it was mutton was its texture. Taste was as stubbornly absent as aroma. Or maybe that's why. Or maybe all of it was just because when you burn everything to a crisp, all you get is charred remains, not FOOD!

The vegetarian sizzler, however, was excellent. But considering that its vegetarian, should we assume then that the chef at Kobe has some difficulty dealing with meat?

All I can commend at Kobes is their pepper sauce. And since I didn't eat a steak this time, IF they still get the same quality of beef, and cook a steak the way they used to, then we can safely say that the Pepper Steak would be just what it used to be. But what are the chances of that?

Oh, and a word on service attitudes. It's been well over two years since I visited Kobe. So I honestly didn't remember whether they serve beer - to me it makes sense to serve beer with a steak. Turns out they don't. Fair enough, I don't have an issue with that - can't help it if they don't have a permit.

What I DO have an issue with is being laughed at dismissively by the waiter when I ask if they serve beer. Waiters would do well to understand that since our bills pay their salaries and WE pay their tips, they are NOT doing us favours by serving us, and alienating and insulting the customer may not be the world's greatest career move.

Quite Nice.

I come to places like Kobe's to have what I'm craving for, which is undoubtedly the sizzler, I even have my favorite one, whether I'm at Kobe's or another place, I always order my "Steak with Chicken and Cheese", its got white meat, red meat, and cheese, how can it possibly be bad?

I think I can certainly say that I have never been disappointed. I am also a huge condiment fan, so as soon as my sizzler arrives, I start attacking it with liberal amounts of chilli flakes, pepper, mustard, ketchup, and whatever else I can find to throw in.

Someone mentioned "gumbo" in one of their reviews somewhere, that is much the manner in which I like to have my sizzler, and places such as this, offer me that opportunity.

Its not easy on the pocket, certainly, but then again, how often do you come out to eat a sizzler, it is definately filling, very few people I ever eat sizzlers with EVER manage to finish everything on the plate, I pride myself at being one such person.

Easily expect to pay about Rs. 350 / head, more so if you are thinking of a dessert and Iced Tea, although a couple with smallish appetites can manage to share a sizzler and a dessert with some drinks, and can find it an affordable splurge for a night out.

One thing that I would like to mention though, is that Kobe's has a nice snack menu that many people overlook, they have sandwiches and burgers, at very competative rates, I would definately suggest that anyone visiting try some of these snacks, they are filling and they give you some options that you wouldn't normally get otherwise.

Dissapointed

Sizzlers are all smoke and mish mash of left over and un-saleable meat and vegetables.

Rarely have I criticised food in any form.

But maybe KOBE on Hill Road, Bandra (West) makes me do it this time.

I have eaten here earlier and not been much impressed, but let it pass, blaming it on a crowded Saturday night. But this time, it was a reticent Sunday night out with the wife and kids and they left me with a horrible taste in the mouth.

A taste of yucks mustard sauce that was way too harsh on all the senses makes me loathe to trash this place.

And their indifferent attitude makes it all the more indigestible. One can understand a let down in quality or workmanship once in a while - but the lacaidascal attitude is what causes a stomach upset - literally - LITTER-ally and figuratively. Pun intended.

You fill a blackened iron plate with a bed of greens. ( so called lettuce leaves but nothing more than cauliflower greenery )

Then you load it with a lot of potato french fries ( soaked in stale oil ) and centre it with the meat of honour ( maybe rubbery chicken / meat / ham or paneer-what else is there to eat ? )

Dress it up with a few colourful julienne carrots, some boiled french beans and sprinkle some de-frozen green peas for good measure - lay this piping hot metal plate on to a wooden platter thats wet - and voila - you have a sizzler smoking and sizzling into your nostrils till you fan yourself into digging into some muck ( fancy some sauce ? )

You shell out approximately 300 bucks for this jamboree of a mini meal that only lines the pockets of our restaurateur and silts the insides of your intestines with carbs and polyinsurated fat.

Not that I dont have some fond memories of great shashlik and satellite sizzlers at YOKO's with friends and a blast of a time at that - but this KOBE made my eyes water and my stomach groan for a couple of days thereafter - which made me so foul mouthed.

Regret sharing my disgust withyou - but I had to vent my fury out somewhere - and B U R R P - offers this opportunity !

Over to you buddies - Rave or Rant - Bouquets or brickbats - choice is yours.

Burp ! Shucks ! That mustard still leaves a stale stink in the bowels.

Regards
Raja
