The food is unashamedly spicy, full of masala and largely coconut based from Malwan. So for those who have sensitive tongues, this is not for you. Its a refreshing change to go to a single cuisine restaurant with no Punjabi, Tandoori, Chinese thrown in. They have recently revamped their menu and added a few bits and pieces [Alu Wadi – Patrel to Gujjus/Parsis, Kothimbir Wadi etc]. Prices have been upped a bit but they are still very reasonable.
The place is always spanking clean and well lit. The owners sit at the counter keeping an eagle eye on proceedings. The curries are obviously pre-cooked but they are always served to you extremely hot, garnished with Coriander and grated Coconut as Malwani food often is. The `Wade’ are always freshly made and hot. The `Amboli’ [fermented – dosa like flatbread] and the `Rice Bhakri’ are not found everywhere. There is a daily `Usal’ [sprouted Pulse curry] and many of the dishes are daily specials.
The Mutton Sagoti Fry, Usals, Shellfish Masala, Prawns and Potato are our favourites and are always good. The Pulaos [Prawn, Mutton, Chicken and Egg] are always extremely tasty and, as with everything else, served hot. I must say that the `Fish Tikhala' is a huge let down. Yes the word `hot’ appears many times. The food is seriously hot – both temperature and spice.
This place is as good as Highway Gomantak but without the sulking, grouching owner and wait staff. You really must visit this bastion of Malwani food.
