  • I wish I could run this place for a day ... 2009-07-26

... then I would show them how to do it properly!

A friend and I went here for breakfast yesterday. Initially we just wanted coffee (think Gloria Jean's) but then we remembered that SWC was open for breakfast (and that I needed to conclude my last review - see below).

It was 9.15am. We got a table no trouble as the place was empty, bar one couple. The staff were cold and looked unhappy. In fact, the security walla at the door gave us a warmer greeting than anyone inside...

We ordered coffee and looked through the tempting breakfast menu. Our appetites were peaking, but then were deflated in no time at all with the dull tones of the waiter who was full of bad news: the cereal I wanted was not available. Only one juice to choose from. It was all getting too difficult for a Saturday morning, and made us wonder why we didn't cook ourselves after all?

The scrambled eggs on a bagel were OK. The eggs were cooked nicely, but the bagel was very chewy. (The Philadelphia cream cheese; however, was not required.) The "hash browns" as stated on the menu (note the plural) turned out to be one lonely hash on the side of my plate - along with half a tomato. The presentation was poor as over half my plate was devoid of anything except shiny white ceramic. The cutlery needed a polish too.

My friend had the scones after his omelette. He had to chase the staff 3 times before he got his (apricot?) jam! I had a cinnamon swirl pastry. Size-wise it was great, but taste-wise, hmm. Let's just say I ate the swirl and left the rest. And why make 2 of these pastries the standard portion size? One is more than enough. The again, perhaps they were trying to clear old stock?

It's such a shame that this cafe lets itself down so many times by doing the simple stuff badly. The place looks great, the bakery section too, but the staff could be better and the availability of items is inexcusable.

I've been here 3 times now. Unless desperate, i.e. my cooker blows up, the shops are closed or I lose the use of my right arm, I doubt I would return to SWC for another disappointing experience. Sad, but true.
