How often does a new restaurant open with much ho-ha in the city and you see those long waits and endless queues while being a part of the ‘happening’ tag & soon you see the restaurant fade away in forgotten history? – Ans: Very Often.
I wish there were betting odds against the lifeline of Sanchos – the ‘much talked about’ Mexican restaurant in Khar. I would have won good bucks, atleast to get back the money that I lost last night dining at Sanchos – Actually, the feeling is rather of money stolen!
Now getting to the point – Thurs night I arrive at this place for dinner after hearing a lot from my buddies on its awesome food, ambiance, etc. I wait for 45 mins for the table (‘the happening’ tag to be blamed), after which I get seated at a table right adjacent to where the door opens. Infact, everytime the door opened I was the frame or the first person the arriving guests were greeted with! Obviously the restaurant is eyeing space utilization & I didn't bother myself too much about it.
So we were 5 people seated, the place was loud with music & all our hopes of sitting down for a nice quiet meal quickly vanished. I wish I knew that this was more like a HRC or a Red Box. Either ways, ambiance was nothing worth the rave being made out to be. I might as well would have gone to a WTF or a HRC.
Next, the server ‘drops’ the menus on the table & walks away as if the kitchen was on fire and comes back only after 10 mins to take our appetizer orders. Until now, there was no silverware or water on our table. I ordered a chips w salsa (basic 101 dish) & a veg potato skin. They didn't have chips with salsa (?!)and the waiter really coaxed me into going for the feisty nachos which I went by. My understanding of a nachos was a bed of nachos covered by a heap of beans, sour cream, guacamole, olives etc.
When I got this dish I was shocked at the miniscule portion, I could literally count the number of chips on the plate! And what pissed me off the most was the dish was 350 bucks!
So I asked the server if they can serve me some more chips to which he replies ‘No’! I said im willing to pay for it to which he said that they only serve chips with the plate of nachos. This is when I lost my patience and spoke to the manager who sent me a plate of chips – against its portion being as tiny as a Rs 10 bag of chips. And guess what, I paid 175 for it – the same price I would have paid had I ordered for salsa with chips! I didn't even argue with these losers when I paid the bill.
What more, the nachos weren’t that bad ( I have had better not just in the fast food US Mexican joints but also in HRC or Sammy Sosa) but they weren’t worth the price. The other appetizer of Potato skin was terrible. Just a big lump of cheese on the potato.
We ordered for a couple of entrees – a vegetable fajita and a enchiladas. The fajita no doubt was excellent and worth the order but the enchiladas was pathetic. And each of the time the waiter would just ‘drop’ the dish and just walk away,
We paid 2000 for no drinks and 4 dishes amongst 5 people and yes, we left the place still hungry. I wasn't looking for cheap food – I would have been happier paying 4000 at Indigo for the kind of food and service they offer. I have paid 2k per person eating at Olives several times but these places – their ambiance, the service, the food deserves it. Sanchos doesn't.
And for people who are looking to try out this ‘happening’ restaurant don't just go by my take but also by the latest reviews where you might find one common theme – ‘Nearing the End’
