  • Bun Maska, Chinese, Sizzlers, Puffs....Wow!!! 2011-05-22

Everything I've tried here has been great! And there's still so much more to try...
Really like the typical Parsi ambience which includes the high ceilings, old furniture and lively uncle sitting at the galla. Not to forget the ultimate Raspberry soda! Cheers to Sassanian!

    Another College time place...
Food is good.. Bun maska chai.. repeat it at least 3 times..
Uncle at the counter tells me one joke everytime i go there...
    And I enjoy it everytime..
"No trains are going beyond Churchgate today..."
He will wait for the scared look on the Bombaywalla who's jus come face to fact of his greatest fear.. NO TRAINS..
"You know why.. cos trains go only till Churchgate"
    Its a Bombay Moment :)
    Simple but for a lifetime

  • Good first experience 2010-12-18

I had no idea that something as simple as bread and butter with a cup of tea could taste so divine!
I had no idea of the traditional background of this restaurant. I went in for a sweetcorn soup.. as the board outside said " veg and nonveg chinese". But the sweet smell of the bakery changed my mind. So I asked for tea and something fresh. The waiter was a bit annoyed with my questions of " whats fresh"
So finally he settled for bun maska.
And oh boy oh boy.. it was awesome.
And the old guy behind the counter was awesome, we had a quick english lesson.
I am gonna visit the resta

  • super kheema pao 2010-12-17

Last week , though friend and I rushed we just did not make it for the kheema pao with chai. One of the best in this part of the world. this place is a definite no-miss when in southern Bombay.
Though a road-side cafe the food is of the special flavor that takes you back decades in Bombay - like th 70's.
The other menu is now quite ordinary - the cakes are decent. There are special Sassanian flavors of the yesteryear , but not in all the dishes.

  • go there for the food and the entertainment 2010-08-02

sassanian is not a place for connoisseurs. it is a place for the realistic, the grounded and for those who want to be entertained - even if it is at their own expense.

the food is tasty, though not brilliant. the kheema-paav is the one dish that comes closest to brilliant. the other snacks and lunch items such as akuri are tasty.chaai and b(r)un-maskaa are a staple - cannot go wrong there. their puffs and cake are good, not too oily, and leave a pleasing aftertaste.

the people sitting at the counter have to be met and spoken with, to understand what goes into running a place like

  • Meh... 2009-09-10

Like the previous person wrote, it is over hyped. Before I get brick bats, let me say, I love old school irani cafes. Kyani rocks! So does Yazdani. But this just did not make the cut. The akuri was ordinary and chai also was nothing to write home about.

  • Breakfast Heaven 2009-07-11

Bun Maska, Brun Maska, Spicy Bhurji washed down with Irani chai on a weekend morning. What else can one ask for.
The owner is true to form in cracking jokes while paying the bill and the attached bakery has some awesome plum and mawa cakes to take home.
Dont go for the decor (there is none) but go for taking a step into an older unhurried world where time ticks slowly like the ancient clock on the wall.

  • Starters, now on for more 2009-03-03

I chanced upon Sassanian as I was walking out of the Bombay Hospital lane and the non-vegetarian in me was lured by promises of mutton cutlets and chicken puffs written in pink, blue and yellow chalk on the blackboard facing the street.

I've only had fare from the bakery so far so I can't tell you too much about most of the fare but the chicken and mutton puffs (both Rs 12) were extremely good and more importantly freshly made. How do I know? Because when I bit into the pastry, it was crunchy but there was no stale flakes sticking to the roof of my mouth and leaving there the grease
