Despite being warned not to go to Yellow Chilli I still braved it for lunch there yesterday. Should have listened to my friends. One would think Sanjeev Kapoor would be worried about diluting his equity (?) with this restauarant but I guess the draw of "expansion" can get anyone.
The decor is pretty nice, bright airy and quite different from the other (limited?) options in Powai. Lunch is a buffet with no option of ordering A La Carte. In my lexicon "Buffet" is not a good word. While some brunch places have managed to prove me wrong, Yellow Chilli had all the elements that I hate about Buffets i.e there is seemingly no desire to move beyond catering to the lowest common denominator. The food: Each table has the option to be served one veg and one non veg starter. While my husband's chicken starter atleast looked edible, my veg starter was a disaster....batter friend baby corn in a hideous dark red colour (really people, is food colouring still legal?) which had been clearly friend many hours ago and re-heated in the microwave. Blechhh! The soup wasn't too bad, a tomato shorba which was a tad too spicy for my liking. The one good thing about the main course was that atleast they had variety for vegetarians. Dal wasn't bad (that does NOT mean it was good!) nor was the jeera aloo but the vegetables in koshundi had a clearly misleading name...I'm not even Bengali and I knew there was no taste of kashundi whatsoever. Apparently the chicken dish was not too bad either. A standard Paneer dish (by colour it was green) and some boring peas pulao were also on offer.
The Dessert choices were some sort of laddoo (really guys LADDOO as dessert in a "fine" restauarant) and kala jamun (way way sweet) with some awful air-filled vanilla ice cream.
My sincerest hope is this isn't THIS food that makes all Mr. Kapoor's cookbooks sell!
