The not so Italian job…

My review if written more than two years ago would have placed it fairly high in a list of must visit Italian eateries in Mumbai – after my visit today, it’s been knocked off that list.

For starters (pun intended) the choice is just okay. The bruschetta has gotten progressively soggier by the day, although I would still like to maintain that it is quite tasty. Lots of extra virgin olive oil though. The dips that accompany the grizzini are very flavorful, worth a try. The soups hardly deserve a mention, and hence I won’t.

There is a fair bit of choice for vegetarians, although it only covers the stereotyped definition of Italian food pizza & pasta. No polenta, linguini, gnocchi etc.

If a place is named such that people can judge the specialty of the place, it should have gone by the name of Pizza Kitchen. Then again, if you are one who likes the Dominos variety of pizza with the thick base, then you should stick to the not so good pasta. Confused eh? I don’t think so; the waiters would beat anyone on that front. Most of them are clueless on what the dishes contain & the others try your patience in their attempts to explain what the dishes are.

The spaghetti aglio olio was far too oily even though the name of the dish translates to spaghetti with oil & garlic. Order any pasta with a tomato based sauce, and they all taste the same except with the variation of the type of pasta used. The pasta alla Siciliana is also just okay.

I’ve always loved their tiramisu, which I will maintain continues to be pretty good, the pretty bad part is that the quantity has been reduced by half. Boo hoo!

Looking back maybe I’ve given a scathing review, but my opinion I think stems from the fact that this place has gradually deteriorated over the two years I’ve visited them.

Overall, an okay okay experience.

Not Much....

while roaming around phoenix mills i came across this restaurant and had a sudden urge to eat something sweet so my friend and i zeroed in on the tiramisu.....yup just the tiramisu !!
well the presentation was quite unique and the item itself would get the same description.it was very much on the bitter side which i personally don't prefer.though it was pretty good it came no where near to what i have eaten at some other places like brio's......also as it cost us something like 200 bucks for just 1 tiramisu it certainly isn't on the cheaper side so think twice before thinking of eating out here.....this place ain't for the faint of wallet !!
but still overall a good place to go....

Strictly OK

After spending the better part of the day window shopping we decided to have a quick bite to round off our expedition. So we decided to step into Pheonix Mills' compound where the wide variety of food available makes it easier to choose what to eat.

Having eaten at the Bombay Blue and Noodle Bar and even Copper Chimney at Phoenix before, I have noticed that the waiters at these restaurants in are particularly bad . So I wasn't really surprised when Spaghetti Kitchen followed suit. Actually, considering the fact that the waiters in the Fort branches of these restaurants are normal, this ineptitude comes as a shock . Perhaps it is due to the fact that most people who come to eat here are not exactly looking for a dining experience - they just want food.

So, it came as no surprise when the waiter looked totally non-plussed when we asked him to explain the difference between the cracker pizza and the thin crust pizza. Perhaps it was the wine waiter we asked because he pointed to another waiter( in a black shirt this time) who unfortunately didn't fare any better. However, he did venture to point out the two different lists in the menu " This is the thin crust pizza and this is the cracker pizza" Thank you! We do know how to read, but what is the difference, we persisted perversely.

The poor guy wanted out so he said one is cracker and the other is thin crust. Are we dumb or what????? On prodding yet more, he volunteered that the thin crust was 19" while the cracker pizza was 17". Really? we didn't bother to verify as we didn't have a measure tape and only wanted to order one pizza and not do a comparative analysis of the two.

Our minestrone soup was good - not something I would go a hundred miles for, but considering we were also not really interested in a dining experience it was worth it. The thin sliver of bread was particularly worth mentioning - it was toasted just right and had the right amount of green ( I assume it was Pesto) sauce on it.

Then came our Margharita Cracker pizza. I must say it was good - crisp and with the right amount of flavouring.

The ambience was pleasant though I was a bit confused with all the black and white pictures of Elvis and other pop stars on the wall. Was there a theme I was missing? However, being a holiday afternoon, there were several ladies who were lunching and surprisingly even though no one was talking loudly, there was a general air of noisiness all around.

At Rs. 285 for a basic Margarita Cracker Pizza ( without tax) I would say this place is not cheap.

The soup selection also was disappointing - only two choices :minestrone and mushroom cappucino ( that sounded intriguing) and at Rs. 135 ( I think since I didn't pay the bill) was not exactly a steal.

However, considering how expensive even bananas are today, a simple meal for two ( especially when you split the pizza) does not exactly make a dent in your pocket.

Would I go there again? I don't know - may be only when I want to eat.............and nothing more.

p.s. What amused me most about the place was the fact that half the restaurant was serving Indian. Indian Pasta? Or Indian Italian? It think it strange that a place called Spaghetti Kitchen should also serve un-Italian food especially in Mumbai where every other place serves Indian food.

dissapointing

The blue foods group has been steadily going downhill though Spaghetti Kitchen has always been consistently acceptable and the odd time pretty top notch.

Last time i was there i had a pretty memorable meal, one of the better ones (not the most authentic but pretty darn good) The service was pretty fantastic as well.

So i returned to the kichen a few months later and it was fairly dissapointing. The place is spacious and airy as ever but the staff seems to have changed and so have the values.

We started off with the Capuccino of mushroom served with mushroom biscotti. Fairly average soup, no great shakes, though they have never done it above average so i guess its allright. The bruschetta is different from most places as they use tomato and mushroom and olive oil. Interesting but tired dish, they need to change it up a bit.

The entrees were the spaghetti in pomodoro (crap, it was undercooked) the lasagna with spinach (not bad but not great either) the crack wheat pizza was the saving grace. Absolutely fantastic.

I think the chefs have gone and started to precook dishes keeping them ready to dunk in hot water and then the sauce. it shows on the quality of the food, taste and texture. I am glad i didnt order a risotto would have been a disaster.

The service was reliable but no friendly suggestions and you had to call them everytime you needed them.

Overall i would say the quality of the experience has gone down by about 60% which is sad. The menu is also worn for use and needs change.

Damage was same as before 2000 for 3 without drinks.

the worst italian (or whatever) in town

Ordered a pesto and some gnocchi. Came out absolutely heinous. This isn't food, welcome to the Cream Centre School of Cooking where every dish is creamy, saucy and dumped with amul cheese.
The ice tea was ok.
Stay away like its the plague.
