Try these and you will never regret!

I have been a regular to Samovar for the last 3 years ever since I started working in Kala Ghoda. I also used to frequent this place much earlier when I was in art school. Used to love coming here for a beer- i have always loved the vibe here.

One thing I have noticed about this place is that either people love it or hate it - theres absolutely no in between!
For that reason I have complied a list of menu items that have never disappointed me.

I have included a snippet from one of my crumbs on Blah, in response to Gaurav Jains post - "Kala Ghoda - A Foodie Walk" http://blah.burrp.com/food/gauravjain/2007/05/18/kala-ghoda-a-foodie-walk

-------------------------------------------------
I would definitely defend Samovar- its my regular lunch spot.. I don't blame the people who hate *Scumovar coz no doubt 80% of the menu is crap (*coined by my dear friend shakfoo - http://mumbai.burrp.com/establishment/view/17451749 - i love calling it Scum ever since)

I am seasoned visitor and learnt things the hard way. Here’s a list of evergreen menu items that you will never regret ordering
- Hyderabadi Kheema Lacha Paratha
- Chicken/ Egg Biryani
- Chicken Makhani with Paratha (only on Saturdays- and the best I have ever had)
- Boti Roti rolls are decent
- Sarson da Sag, Makke di Roti

And of course- a beer on a working Saturday afternoon!
------------------------------------------------

I would like to add a few others to the list
- Egg Masala ( the closest to what i get at home)

Some more for the Veggies:
- Rajma Masala
- Punjabi Dahi Caddi

If you want to order rice, order the Saffron Rice (biryani rice) its better than the regular steam rice. Don't like the rice they use for the steam rice.

A good option for a quick lunch

This place has been a regular joint for me and some of my colleagues. It is only open during the day - gallery timings - and shuts around 7.

Yes, I would agree that the service here is not the best, but as a regular I must say I get treated very well. That is no excuse for the shoddy service that others have written about, but it certainly allows me to concentrate on the food.

Even though the menu offers only a few wholesome meals, they certainly know how to make them well. Saturdays is usually Chicken Makhanwalla - you better get there early as it runs out by around 2PM - among the best makhanwalla's I have eaten around town.

The other interesting dishes that are on offer are Hyderabadi Kheema, all their biryani's are good, they have some sort of chicken masala that is very tasty and of course, the paratha's are yummie :) They also serve the standard splash and dash type foods like rolls (chicken, boti - called the Boti-Roti Roll, paneer, other veg.)

True, the service needs to improve (that is why i rated it average, not good), but that should not stop you from enjoying a good meal at a place which is the closest thing we can get, to an outdoor eatery!! It's nice to eat lunch next door to the Prince of Wales Museum and its gardens.

Lacks service, below average food

This nondescript place is actually located inside the Jehangir Art Gallery. There is nothing too praiseworthy or notable about this place.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer - shakfoo, this place has below average food and okayish service. The waiters were inattentive. I ordered a dal and rice. The dal was okay, but the rice was horrible. It was not the usual basmati rice you get at restaurants. This was more like 1/3 of the basmati rice and was sticky.

The surprising part is that so many foreign tourists eat at this place, maybe because it is inside an art gallery.

Scum-ovar!

This place is right across the street from where I work and I have been talked into going there for lunch with co-workers on several occasions.

Food is terrible - I've always had to deal with gastro-intestinal upheavals after eating here
Service is shoddy - At lunch time this place is so bustling that the wait staff does not really give a crap about you or your order
Ambience - what ambience?!?!

In my opinion one word very nicely sums up this place - "grotty". Definitely worth skipping.
