I remember eating at Mahesh when it was a step-off the road and into the hole- in- the- wall Manglorean eatery in Fort. In those days it was dark and dingy, with slow whirring fans, greasy waiters with greasy smelly towels thrown over the shoulder attending to you while the Boss screamed instructions in his high speed lingo. Those days the currys were really yummy - the coconut flavour really strong. The prawns really succulent and the fish really soft and melt in your mouth. But apart from the excellent food, what made this restaurant really great was that everyone else turned their nose up at it - it was too down market for any one but the lower -down- the- rung office goers who had to grab a quick bite, so like the forbidden fruit, it tasted better.
Somewhere down the road, the young guys at Citibank discovered the convenience and cheapness of the place and soon it became "the place to dine". Soon it became the place to "wine and dine on authentic ethnic sea food". With the airconditioning and the lobster on display, the fancy maitre d's and the waiters, the place acquired an upmarket polish - as seen by the crowds waiting outside to get a place in.
Along with the makeover, the prices have become upmarket too and the food has changed to suit the palates of the fussy eaters. The gussys have become more thick and less tasty, the prawns have become chewier and the fish fried too crisp at the risk of becoming hard to bite. So what still brings me to Mahesh?
Its simply unbeatable neer dosa ! This is really the best place to get the fluffiest, light, laciest neer dosas.

Mahesh Lunch Home is a food lovers paradise! Tucked away in a quiet corner of fort next to the legendary Yezdani Bakery and close to the Bombay Store, this little gem is well known for its Mangalorean dishes. This restaurant is most famed for its seafood dishes but vegetarians wont be disappointed either. The maitre d' comes and displays lobsters, crabs and prawns with great finesse at the tables and suggests preparations with each of them. It is a great way to show children what their food looks like before it is cooked! The staff are friendly and the service is reasonably prompt.
We ordered the solkadi as refreshments which was absolutely delectable. I didnt know what Kokum was so the maitre d asked someone to bring me some in a bowl to show me what it was- a lovely touch, I thought! The vegetarians amongst our group ordered tandoori mushrooms which were cooked to perfection. The grilled veggie starter was a bit of a damp squib with large chunks of potatoes and extra large florets of cauliflower. I had the fish tikka (made with Rawas) which was absolutely delectable! For the main course, we ordered prawn gassi and vegetable gassi with appams. Fabulous food and generous portions too. Since they didnt have fresh mango which we would have liked to have for dessert, we settled for caramel custard which reminded me of the comfort food we used to make in my childhood. A meal at Mahesh must be followed up with a magahi paan from the paanwala around the corner who tells a fabulous story about the paan he makes and makes the paan with a fine flourish!

Mahesh lunch home is the best place for seafood...
especially the crab and lobster dishes...
A mangalorean restaurant with a great feel.
Also another great touch is when the head waiter comes out with plates of king prawns and lobster and crab..
The only dish that didnt meet expectations was the squid in butter...but other than that the best for a few drinks with the boys or a nice dinner with the better half...
