Run of the Mill

Went to Masala Kraft for the first time last night and was a little surprised at how thoroughly adequate it turned out to be.

On the upside, the service was impeccable. I guess that's to be expected (if not demanded) from the Taj.

The menu wasn't exactly very large, but we did manage to find a couple of dishes we thought would be interesting. We ordered the Mutton Galoti Kababs and the Tandoori Aloos for appetizers. Both dishes were tasty but certainly not anything to write home about. This was also the case with our entrees - the Murgh Khhatta Payaz and the Paneer Kaali Mirch. The garlic butter naan, however, was pretty exceptional.

Total hit to the pocket book was about 3K - including drinks.

All things said, a decent meal but not sure if I'll be going back to Masala Kraft in a hurry.

Interesting but nothing to write home about

If Masala Kraft was a stand alone restauarant I might have rated it higher. But unfortunately for it, being located in the Taj Mahal Hotel brings with it the baggage of expectation, or maybe its just the 5 star pricing that does that! Either ways I would describe my experience there as "Just ok".The ambience is fairly non descript and forgettable. The menu is interesting and innovative and ensures there's more than just the standard dal makhani and aloo jeera on offer. To start with we had the paneer tikka which was excellent and the veggie seekh kebab which sadly was dry and tasteless. As part of the main course we decided not to trod the beaten path so got the stringless beans with chilkoza (pine nuts), green peas with water chestnuts and the peppaywale chole, all of which were decent (and best of all not oily at all, almost like home food....unfortunately not my home but someone's I'm sure!) but honestly nothing to gush about. What was really interesting though were the drinks including options like kalakhatta margherita and some other interesting sounding things that I can't quite remember to describe but definitely had my attention.
All in all I had a good time, but I'd attribute that more to my dinner companions than the fairly average gastronomical experience.

awesome

Experience - Great restaurant, good ambience, the place is done up well. Although very generic, it is quite a chilled out place to be having dinner. I however dont think the minimalist take on the surrounding works for an Indian eatery

Drink : Bottled Water

Food : The menu isnt expansive, but its thoughtfully chosen to give you a taste of all that you can gather from the cuisine of the North. There is a decent enough selection for vegetarians and they have a tiffin option which we did not try.
We ordered the Peepay wale choley, Dal Makhani, Naans, Kulcha & Pulao. For some reason i had a hankering for bread which is weird.
However the food was superlative, the choley were fantastic, well done, full of taste and the kulcha that came was soft and a perfect accompaniment for the choley.
The Dal Makani seemed thoughfully prepared, again an explosion of tastes, very similar to the choley yet you could very easily tell the difference between the two tastes, subtle but vivid.
The Naan was quite soft and warm rather than the the crispy, hot ones u get at other places. Better Naan then most other places.
The portions werent bad either, three of us at quite easily while my mom nibbled a little. Overall you could easily feed 4 people with this much food.

I am going back there, again sometime very soon.
