Dehati Utsav @ Golden Star

Heard about this south Mumbai thali place often from friends and always wanted to try it out, in fact after reading the previous review I made it a point to visit. Thank you Parijat because trust me, @ this place the food really rocks. Infact there is a kinda food festival going on I think till the end of this month which no thali lover should miss.
I was surprised at the name of the food festival, They call it Dehati Rasoi Utsav. As soon as I got my table the waiters dressed in turban and desi attire came one by one and I swear in one minute my thali was full with more than 25 items or more.
Now to write about the food, I tell you every morsel was a treat. infact it is then, that I understood what they meant by Dehati. It was typical Gujarati and Rajasthani food right from the village infact right from the homes of these states I can not even remember the names of certain dishes they served as I had them for the first time ever.
I am going back for the same before the festival ends and that too with my whole family. Because I want them to taste the actual Gujju and Maru Dehati food which is rare to find in Mumbai as one gets only commercialised stuff with moreover the same taste all over.
So guys rush @ Golden Thali and enjoy The Dehati utsav till it lasts.

Maharaj's Lair

This is going to be my first review on Burrp. And what a way to start. Last night I happened to be @ Operahouse. shopping for a Plasma TV @ Vijay sales. My friend suggested that we visit Golden Star Thali opposite the Charni Road Stn. I had heard a lot about the place but living @ Andheri I did not get to frequent this place. I was so happy to be there that I made up my mind to write this review. Luckily for me it happened to be their first day of the Food festival. Titled, The Best of Hemji Maharaj (chef).
It says, A unique compilation of Gujarati / Rajasthani food & delicacies, created during the 30 years of expertise as one of the greatest Maharaj's of Gujarati & Rajasthani cuisine.
And so do I say greatest HE IS. The quality of food, the items like lasan ki sabzi served on bajra rotlas was just too good, I wonder how one could make the pungent garlic into a tasty vegetable and serve it so innovatively. the Khichia ki sabzi was something I had for the first time too. The Mohanthal is to die for, it just melted in my mouth the pure ghee oozed out at the first bite and so was their Dal Baati their (trade mark) I hear. I think there were 4 sweets and 3 starters along with 4 superb veggies and God knows how many types of breads. I just wonder how these guys dish out more than 25 or more different varieties of dishes at one time. I think the 5 Star Hotels and the so called Franchise chains should learn from the management @ Golden Star. Hats off for their on the dot prompt service and full marks to Hemji Maharaj too. I am going back for more ASAP.

ho hum!

Finally got to Golden Star and it was a huge let down. The ambiance is nothing to write home about and the food is pretty average.

We had the staple potato in tomato gravy, dal, kadi, and the three boring veggies.

The saving grace was the fantastic dal baati, tomato uttapam and khichadi. they bumped the meal to average from fairly poor.

the service was scatter brained and slow.

at 210 bucks a pop, i can get a comparable thali at Samrat or Status in better ambiance for less.

quantity over quality i reckon...

Pure Gold

Just as I am back for my vacation, I visited Golden Star. This time I went on a Sunday to savour their Unlimited Aamras. My my was I in for a surprise. The aamras is to die for. I do not think or know of any Gujju thali restaurant which serves purest of Alphonso aamras then Golden Star. This is the only restaurant who stand for what they advertise and deliver exactly what they say. Hats off I am a die hard fan of this place now and forever.

Good Thali Place

A good thali place, though my personal preference is Rajdhani at crawford market or Thackers at marine lines.

The food at golden star has been consistently good though the ambience leaves a lot to be desired.
