The last time I visited this place about a year ago they were really all in a mess. Since then had not taken the risk. This time around it was a Saturday night, but since we were a big group of 15 with 4 kids we needed to call it an early night. Called for reservations at 6.30 PM and was told it was sold out, as half the restaurant (outdoors) was booked for a private party. On much pleading we were offered a table on the condition we finished by 10.15 PM latest. Suited us just fine. Since the variety here caters for everyone I asked for a Grovers La Reserve red wine to drink with the continental starters. The last time I remember asking for it at this place it was a warm (read mumbai hot) bottle of wine. When I aksed about wine temperature I was told that "Sir Red Wine is always Served At Room Temperature" . Yes my friend that is so true, if your restaurant is located in Northern Europe where the room temperature seldom exceeds 18 degrees Celsius. This time around I warned them and much to my surprise the wine was at 18 degrees C. The service is slow, especially when there are kids screaming for their pizza (wood fired is great but when!!!!!). My daughter asked for Jalapeno Cheese Poppers, not really unto the mark. The Indian main course on the other hand was very tasty. No deserts ordered since everyone was weight watching.

...this place fails with its lackluster and inexperienced service. The place has the potential to be the "it" spot for the suburbs, with a great Miami-like Mediterranean theme, a fantastic outdoor area, complete with exotic foliage and serene fountains - but the mosquitoes kill! If they do something about that (and I'm not talking about those age-old coils that don't work worth a rats ass), the outdoor scene would be fabulous. The waiter was obnoxious, and upon learning that he had faltered on of our pasta dishes with the wrong sauce (alfredo cream sauce), he brought the same pasta back by just adding some tomato sauce to it - what a buffoon!
So Shatranj, if you're listening, I strongly suggest you work on these two major issues: service and mosquitoes - and you've got yourself a winner.

We went to Shatranj Napoli last night and I must say that I got mixed vibes about the place.
Seating - 4/5
Their outdoor seating is fantastic. The right kind of ambiance, and lighting. The perfect place to hang out after a hectic work day. Well almost perfect, except for the gazillion mosquitoes and the hardcore gangsta rap "music" they play. Dr. Dre, 2 Pac and numerous other gangsta were heard extolling the quality of "west coast weed". If you have children, stay away from this place.
We had to coax them to put a mosquito coil near our table. But I enjoyed the ambiance, hence the good marks.
Food -- 4/5
The food was tasty. Everything we ordered, be it the Margarita Pizza or the Ai 4 Formaggio pasta. The only problem was that my pasta came in a creamy sauce, even when the menu said that they put in fresh tomato sauce on special request (and I requested it when placing my order). When I pointed this out to the manager, he had his boys take it back. It returned with the same sauce, but now with an orangish tinge. Anyways, even with the goof, the pasta was very tasty. So I give them good marks for it.
By the way, they have a wierd combo of Italian and some Murg Kabab type food in their menu. Separate sections for Italian and Mughlai (or Lucknowi), but didn't think I'll see such a menu in this lifetime. Just a strange combination to have.
Service -- 2/5
The only spoil sport was the service. The manager was clueless. His walk had a stride that only the clueless exhibit (hat tip to Aarti for pointing this out). When we requested for capers to be put in a pasta, it didn't happen. Even my fresh tomato sauce pasta came with a creamy sauce. We had to ask for the mosquito coil several times. The pizza was served about 20 minutes before any of the other dishes were.
The prices were reasonable. A glass of domestic red wine cost Rs. 250, the pizza was for Rs. 139. Overall the bill came to about Rs. 1600 for 4 people.
Overall a mixed experience, but I'd give them another chance. Nothing was too bad or crazy.

My review might be biased because the weather has been so pleasant and we were able to enjoy a wonderful meal under the stars in the outdoor patio on a not-very-busy night last week.
Obviously I really liked the ambience. The waitstaff was quick, capable and polite. The menus were kind of shabby but the food selection was huge. I had a really nice jerk chicken appetizer. The bowtie (I think they called it "Butterfly") pasta was okay but too spicy, and not Italian-ey tasting enough for me. Does't mean I didn't finish the whole thing! :o)
The pizza we got had slices of all their pizza offerings. Nice, thin crispy crust.
It's a pricey dinner if you're a healthy drinker, like me and my crowd.
