V.Good Midnight Buffet

One of my fav spots to hang out after partying around in south mumbai. Its midnight buffet is a little different than the ones at other high end places where they offer all sorts of cuisines and many of them been cooked hours before. At Corleone, thier midnight buffet consits of 5-6 salads, a soup, and fresh cooked thin crust pizzas.
The soup we had - Tomato and Basil was one of the best I have ever had. The salads were good - although they can add a lot more variety to this counter. The pizzas were top notch (I add this to my best pizzas in town list with Karma & Penne). Too add to it - the staff at Corleone is always very friendly. A must visit even for a cup of coffee for the excellent ambiance and a greater view. Buffet price: $550 + taxes (a little exp as compared to other buffets around a lesser price for a greater variety

Can gorge without feeling guilty

Wanted to go to Dome but unfortunately there was some private party there so ended up at Corleone. Like the decor, very classy. The also has an instrumental live band playing.

They serve a bread basket with a paste of sundried tomatoes, chilli, garlic and olive oil. It was simply divine. Was also astonised to see whole wheat pasta and whole wheat margerita. Ordered a minestrone soup, margerita and wholewheat penne arrabiata.

The soup arrived instantly after we had ordered it. I know most of the stuff is often kept prepared but doesn't mean they need to remind us like this. The soup was very Indianised as well. Have never seen cauliflower in a minestrone soup before and they had many chunks of it in the soup. Definately avoid.

On the other hand the pasta was really good and you could never tell it was whole wheat. Loved the fresh basil on the pizza. Yummy. I think we ordered too much since just a soup and main course would have been more than sufficent for two of us.

Service was decent but there were only 2 waiters on a fri nite so they looked kinda overloaded.

Damages: Rs 1400 for a soup, pasta and pizza

ouch

Well, it was a disaster. got in around 10.30 last night for a quickie meal.

Minestrone was below average, thicky, tomato heavy, not enough veggies.

Stuffed Mushrooms, good as always.

Ortolana - absolutely bland. Had no taste, no matter how much salt i added. Almost had to ask for ketchup.

Overall a terrible meal.

Got 2 x Lemon Neres which were great.

Now i had to pay 1600 bucks for this. which in my opinion is money better spent on eating dirt.

The service was friendly, quick and apologetic. However, i dont think i will be returning here ever again.

Also the gentleman who was ranting and raving at the valet parking staff, Sir, that is not how we behave in Bombay. Learn to be polite, hold your drinks and not embarrass your daughter.

Wanker!

so-so Italian fare in town

The Interconti on Marine Drive sports some pretty awesome venues - Czar Bar and the Dome itself are the pride jewels of the hotel, but I can't go as far for Corleone, their signature Italian restaurant. The ambiance is simply fantastic, what you would expect from an Italian place anywhere else in the world; classy, romantic, and cozy. The service was a bit slow and I had to order my fresh orange juice twice before it actually showed up.

The main disappointment of the night was the actual food. I can't say that anything I tried here really tasted like the hearty Italian I was expecting (and expect from every Italian joint I go to). The food was average and I guess my expectations had been built up by the pretty environment.

Also, the wine list is a bit disappointing.

The Don would not be pleased

The big man and I had walked up to Pizza Express at Veer Nariman only to find it has dissapeared. In the mood for Italian, but not for walking we headed round the corner to the Intercontinental to check out Corleone.
In pretty early we got a good window, there was only one other couple in the place. The service was quick and attentive. Bread and water swiftly appeared with what I am guessing was tapenade, but with waaay too much balsamic in it - it shouldn't taste pickled - so we left that.
For starters I ordered the roasted mushrooms, creating great gusts of enthusiasm from our waiter about how it was the best starter and how it was flying out the door. The big man ordered the veg antipasta. Both arrived in a timely manner, but I was not impressed. 10 or 12 small field mushrooms, stuffed with a tonne of garlic and then drowned in a gallon of olive oil is not my idea of a taste sensation, and I LOVE mushrooms (and galic and olive oil). The big mans starter was also dissapointing, fairly sure someone had just cut a slice of cheese (answers on a postcard re the type), opened a jar of sun dried tomatoes, added some Kalamata Olives, danced over some onion and then tried to set it afloat on olive oil. Hmmmmm.
Main course followed at a gracious period after, giving us time to listen to the band tune up and then start playing Beatles tracks....no comment.
The big mans veg lasagne was an amazingly compact piece of engineering. Like it had been put in a box with weights on for a few days. Containing little more than tomatoes, peas and pasta there was nothing wrong with it, and to be fair true Italian lasagne is mostly pasta with a little sauce inbetween, but normally you would expect some peppers/ mushrooms/ aubergine even. Just for fun. My Spaghetti Carbonara was not worthy of the Don. Carbonara should be rich, silky, decadent with a hint of panchetta, not sticky, oily (do they have a mob connection in the olive oil trade) and loaded with little tiny bits of extremely salty, hard lumps of very finely diced panchetta. Dear me, when I blow this many calories I want to enjoy it.
With 1 glass of wine, a soft drink, a bottle of evian and the above it came to 2000 INR. I know its in a hotel but I think that was expensive, certainly by UK, Italian or US standards.

The worst thing was, I completed the comment card we got with our bill. I mentioned there was too much oil in everything and the carbonarra was salty. The waiter must have showed it to the manager and on the way out of the door I got rounded on by two besuited blokes demanding to know why I didn't like the food etc etc. I told them again but was a little taken aback - I didn't realise filling in the comments card make you a target for a mob hit.....I'll be swimming with the fishies pretty soon.
