A friend, visiting from New York, was complaining that she had as much as she could take of the spicy Indian food. Therefore I decided to take her to Monza.
The stewards were taking the last lunch orders when we trooped in. What I liked most about this place was the stark straight lines of its decor in monochromatic shades of black and white with a bit of gold thrown in. Presumably to reflect the sunlight within the room.
The wine list looked exhaustive, but since I dont drink wine, I could not judge if it was good or bad.
We ordered for a tomato mushroom cappuchino soup and what we got was salty rasam. We sent it back, with our mouths smarting with the overdose of salt and were later served the same soup again which was lip smacking. Though a bit greasy, it had the distinct flavor of the tomoto and mushroom kicking in.
For starters we ordered something which had mushroom sitting on fried sphagetti with cream sauce and balsamic sprinkling. And this was the only item that we ordered which did not have too much salt. The stir fried prawn with asparagus and lettuce was almost doused with rock salt. So was the filet mignon. We also had a cous cous preparation with veggies and sauce. It was good. But nothing to rave about.
The damage to the pocket was around Rs 1200 for all of this. I would not say that it was money well spent, because the proportions were very small.
Visit this place if you want to impress someone. Otherwise there are better options in town.

Rest : Monza
Time : Dinner
Location : Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel.
Experience: We walked in around 9pm into the newly opened restaurant. Gambled against getting a table. It was busy but they seated us right away.
Order : Hummus platter (spicy, original, red) Minestrone, Penne in pesto, Penne in Arabbiata.
Drinks : Pinot Noir, Aquafina.
Food: The hummus was fantastic. The tastes were different yet seemed to go in the same direction. Good hummus is hard to find in this city and the Monza crew have done well to mix mediterranean with the italian.
Like one of my fav restaurants the Aladdin chain of Upstate New York (Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca) The pesto was fantastic, warm, creamy and full of taste, slightly heavier and gravier than the usual dry pesto one would expect.
The Arabbiata was spicy, peppery in its taste, interesting taste by itself but when compared to the pesto it seemed like the loser. Fortunately my brother who had ordered the pesto didnt like it and prefered the Arabiata so we switched. The dissapointing thing about the restaurant is that being a wine bar, they dont have a Riesling selection. This is bordering on criminal.
Secondly they need to offer a bit more in terms of garnish like pepper, Parmesan (an unacceptable oversight). Lastly the portions are so ridiculously small that we really had to go out and get a pizza on the way home. It was in no way filling at all and felt like i was eating a childs portion.
Overall : I would give the food an 8/10 while the Service 8/10 but its not a value for money meal by a longshot.
Damage : 1500 INR ($40)

Saturday night dinner, and I was itching for wine - burrp told me this place had a wine bar, so thought I'd go for it. I've been to better abroad, but not bad for Mumbai. Ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir from New Zealand that the waiter recommended and it wasn't bad. We started with a Roasted Mushroom salad (with a balsamic reduction dressing) and the Corn and Cottage Cheese Cigars and both were excellent. I opted for the Polenta Cakes and Wild Mushrooms - the only issue I had with this dish was the forceful collaboration of Asian style stir fried vegetables that accompanied the polenta cake and wild mushrooms. Tip for the Monza chef: keep the stir fry out, go for something simpler (rosemary grilled potatoes?).
Aaziaanos is owned by the same people - tell your waiter to get you in for free after your meal - he shouldn't object.

As the previous reviewer has mentioned, the lighting is pleasant. The food is good (and I don't particularly like Italian food!). They have a good selection of wines, and the good thing is that they do not try to push expensive wines if you ask them for recommendations.
Definitely worth a check-out.
