This is going to be my first review on Burrp. And what a way to start. Last night I happened to be @ Operahouse. shopping for a Plasma TV @ Vijay sales. My friend suggested that we visit Golden Star Thali opposite the Charni Road Stn. I had heard a lot about the place but living @ Andheri I did not get to frequent this place. I was so happy to be there that I made up my mind to write this review. Luckily for me it happened to be their first day of the Food festival. Titled, The Best of Hemji Maharaj (chef).
It says, A unique compilation of Gujarati / Rajasthani food & delicacies, created during the 30 years of expertise as one of the greatest Maharaj's of Gujarati & Rajasthani cuisine.
And so do I say greatest HE IS. The quality of food, the items like lasan ki sabzi served on bajra rotlas was just too good, I wonder how one could make the pungent garlic into a tasty vegetable and serve it so innovatively. the Khichia ki sabzi was something I had for the first time too. The Mohanthal is to die for, it just melted in my mouth the pure ghee oozed out at the first bite and so was their Dal Baati their (trade mark) I hear. I think there were 4 sweets and 3 starters along with 4 superb veggies and God knows how many types of breads. I just wonder how these guys dish out more than 25 or more different varieties of dishes at one time. I think the 5 Star Hotels and the so called Franchise chains should learn from the management @ Golden Star. Hats off for their on the dot prompt service and full marks to Hemji Maharaj too. I am going back for more ASAP.

Finally got to Golden Star and it was a huge let down. The ambiance is nothing to write home about and the food is pretty average.
We had the staple potato in tomato gravy, dal, kadi, and the three boring veggies.
The saving grace was the fantastic dal baati, tomato uttapam and khichadi. they bumped the meal to average from fairly poor.
the service was scatter brained and slow.
at 210 bucks a pop, i can get a comparable thali at Samrat or Status in better ambiance for less.
quantity over quality i reckon...

Just as I am back for my vacation, I visited Golden Star. This time I went on a Sunday to savour their Unlimited Aamras. My my was I in for a surprise. The aamras is to die for. I do not think or know of any Gujju thali restaurant which serves purest of Alphonso aamras then Golden Star. This is the only restaurant who stand for what they advertise and deliver exactly what they say. Hats off I am a die hard fan of this place now and forever.

A good thali place, though my personal preference is Rajdhani at crawford market or Thackers at marine lines.
The food at golden star has been consistently good though the ambience leaves a lot to be desired.

I just love it. Everytime I am in India I make it a point to visit this place near Charni Road stn. And this time of the year when I go to Golden Star Thali I freak out on their Undhyo. I do not know of a place that serves a better Undhio then at Golden Star. Our family, being from the USA do visit as many restaurants as possible even the places serving Gujju and Marwari thalis but Golden Star thali takes the top notch place in serving thalis. Even their dal bati is to die for, their service staff dressed in typical Rajasthani attire Pagdi et al are the best and courteous too, they just keep coming till you drop eating. Even their catch line is. WE SERVE AS LONG AS YOU CAN EAT.
