Good, VFM Mughlai fare...

I've been an Andheri resident for almost all my years in Mumbai. And I have tried a lot of these places which rule Andheri. However, Zaffran turned out to be tucked away in a corner and hence away from my glance.

Went to this place finally after doing a Burrp on this one, and while there were mixed reviews, had to take that chance to try out a new joint.

The ambiance, I agree, gives it the wind of a seedy joint, like the previous reviewers said, the Pink does not give exactly a very enthusiastic experience. But heavens grace, everything else turned out to be gooooood!

I had no intentions of having the regular butter chicken, and hence I decided to go with our waiter's choice for the dishes we were to order. We called for Harissa Jali Kabab in the starters, which were actually huge portions of Chicken legpieces (boneless) in Harissa (Google up to see if you can find a meaning on the herb). The sumptous appetizer downed, the main course was called for. they had a bread called "Zaffrani Taftan" which had its dough made in milk and not in water... not too oily, and good and soft to eat. Murg Patiala was the main course dish, and the portions were huge. Dal Makhani came along.

Boy, the portions were so huge that we had to give our Dal the miss and only finish our meal with the chicken dish. But how can we pass Desserts. They had a signature Chenna Payesh, which again had a unique preparation and was worthy of our palatte.

The portions huge, the prices reasonable, and the Biryani yet not tried. I am gunning for this place soon, and he could be serious competition to my regular joint "Just Biryani" across the road!

You enjoy yourselves when you get here.... :)

Food: Good, Place: Bad

I have been to Zaffran at least four times now, and I though that's good number of times to write a review about the place.

Now, lets look at this place from different perspectives, why do you go to a restaurant??
- Duhh, to eat, you say: then my friend, this is the place for you!! Zaffran provides really delicious moghlai food, good kababs, really nicely prepared biryani, amazing curries. I have had their payali kababs, chello kabab (a little weird with rice and curd) and their tandoori chicken. What's nice is that the kababs are not overdone with extra oil and masala, so it tends to give it a nice traditional taste.
- The naans and rotis are awesome; the curries are great.
- The biryani deserves it own paragraph. Lately, i have been getting the feeling that there is a dearth of good biryani places in Mumbai; even the known places: its either too dry or too oily or too much masala. Zaffran manages to get it right, but yes too much saffron. In fact, there is too much saffron in every dish. Sometimes, you feel they took their name too seriously.
- Dessert: You should try the Zafrrani Chenna Payesh; its nicely prepared and provides the perfect end to the meal. Though, I must warn you, you may need to share it will 1-2people. It's way too filling after the heavy meal you just had.

Now, that the food has been described, if you are going to Zaffran for a good experience, a good time with family/friends, unless you are the hookah kind, this place does not have much to offer. The place has an inside and outdoor section, the place outside is done in bamboo and wierd chairs (the seating overall is not too comfortable); there is a pinkish tinge to the place (due to the lighting and the wallpapers) which makes the place look shady. The music is generally Atif Aslam, or the latest emraan hashmi movie song. The service is neither good nor bad, lets say there is nothing noticeable about the service.

The price is reasonable considering the good quantity of food they give, you might end up taking a doggie bag home in most cases.

So, back to perspectives, if you only go to a restaurant for the food it serves, then this is certainly a good place to visit and revisit...

Maybe Once again

Went to check out the place at 12 noon on 12 Nov sunday, having heard great things about the food, but wary about service etc. Saw cleaning going on, but was assured of AC environment inside if we wished. We decided to sit at home have a couple of beers, order takeaway which we were assured max 30 min. We ordered Murg Kali Mirch Kabab (taste nice but chicken was tough) Tangdi Kabab (Burnt on the sides & chicken was tougher than the other) Lucknowi Sheekh Kebab (Very good, though could have done with some more spice) Zaffran's Galouti Kabab (Nice but needed to be cooked a little more) The roomali were hot, the garlic naan were extremely good. The phudina chutney was ok. The chicken biryani was good, with the rice quality pretty good & the taste of chicken permeating right thru. The phirni was OK. Though it took them nearly 90 minutes for delivery in the afternoon after 3 reminders. However would not mind trying out the meat stuff & other biryani.

Not worth a second visit

I read about the reviews of Zaffran in several newspapers and Burrp and decided to try it out. Was sadly disappointed. The ambience was not comforting or cosy....there were lots of mosquitoes and the restaurant was not clean. The food was nothing to rave about at all. We ordered the Zaffran murg mussalam and Nihari gosht. The chicken gravey was good, but the mutton dish was strictly ok. Will not visit again!
