Average Italian Food - Bad Service

Just had dinner at the Mezzo Mezzo yesterday..
The waiter hard-sold us the set menu making it out to be the most exotic menu on earth!
Bad part - nothing about the set menu was in writing - which is pretty un-professional considering that this is a Marriott chain restaurant..
They proclaim that the set menu - priced between Rs. 2500/- to 3500/- per head would have a variety of starters, soup, main course & dessert.
But it was nothing of that kind. We began with a cold salmon starter, moved on to a chicken soup and then waited endlessly for the other items..
The wait time was nearly 45 minutes between the soup and the starters..
The starter consisted of 1 mushroom pizza (thin-crust), a cheese based pasta, followed by another variety of pasta on a bed of mince meat...This was followed up with a piece of sea bass on a bed of lentils..
Although the sea bass was grilled perfectly, the lentils were undercooked..
The dessert was a bowl of tiramisu (have tasted better tiramusu elsewhere).
Initially when we walked in the welcome and service was incredible, but when we started ordering and the restaurant filled up, it deteriorated..
Funny thing, they have an Evian bottle placed on every table..Only when we asked for mineral water - was Himalayan produced...
This place is frequented by foreigners & expats - and was pretty packed till quite late in the night...
Excellent and comfortable seating - but too many tables reserved for smokers - and the smoke from these tables tend to intrude on the non-smoking section too..
All in all, an expensive dinner - not worth the cost!

Please Don't Go!!

Mezzo Mezzo at the JW Marriot is a Terrible place to spend an evening out.

The fact that it was less than half empty when i walked in, is not half as Alarming as the food and service here are.

Once seated, we were presented with a Wine list - most of which was unavailable. Upon asking what was in fact available, the Sommelier recommended a bottle of a Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio as "a fruity medium bodied well rounded wine" but this wine had little to offer regarding fruit, flavor or body (which was very light ) - if gatorade was fermented it would taste of this wine.

I started my meal with some Beef Carpaccio which had the potential to be really nice, with the well seasoned meat, fresh rocket leaves and really nice Parmigiano reggiano. But then, there was the very Criminal use of a Hollandaise type sauce which just discombobulated my palate and me - a bad start.

Next, one of my companions asked our server to describe Parpadelle, which he failed to do, but dashed in to ask the chef and came back with "its like linguine".
Its bad enough that your server at a specialty restaurant cannot describe whats on the menu, but a chef not being able to tell you that Parpadelle is a half dried egg pasta (thicker and more chewy than linguine) is preposterous!!
So i decided to play it safe and ordered me a Prosciutto Pizza which was edible only after i doused it in olive oil and chilly flakes.

There were some more disasters.
A Grilled Prawn dish was served cold.
The tenderloin looked Unwell - i didn't taste it because of that.
Another Pizza was sent back because our confused server had got the order wrong.
And then there was the Chef who came out to chat and actually offered some Tobasco sauce when someone asked for their dish to be made spicy!!!!
Oh!! and this chef claimed to be the head chef, but his demeanor made me seriously doubt this, and on further investigation ( i have my ways) found out that he was in fact a trainee chef - the executive chef had a day off.

Average food. BAD service. Boring Decor. Prices are standard 5star rates.

Mezzo Mezzo at the JW Marriot is Really a Terrible place to spend an evening out.
People, i urge you to not waste a good evening here - Don Giovanni and Mangiferra, both in the vicinity, have a much better pizza and the former has a killer carpaccio.

Thumbs up

I went here for a relaxed Sunday lunch. And learnt that they do not have a la carte on Sundays, but only the buffet is offered. Either way, the food is smacking affair.
First, let me tell you about the ambience and the seating arrangement. I particularly chose a table which gave me a wide view of the Juhu beach through the high-ceiled glass windows. Just that view is worth the bomb the charge for the meal.
The decor is wooden with seasoned timber rafters on the ceilings and comfortable wooden chairs. The dining area is divided into two sections, one has a seating arrangement suitbale for groups of over 5 people. The other one is for an more intimate dining arrangement.
Now, let's move on to the food. I don't quite recall the names of the various things I tried out. But will do my best to describe them.
Unlike other restaurants, this one has a decent spread for vegetarians. The salad counter has sprouts and usual suspects of iceberg lettuce, tube roots, pasta et al. I steered clear from them to try out the pink salmon which was perfect, not too salty or squishy.
While you can help yourself to the soup and the salad, the main course is brought to your table. There are pies, quiches and there was one particular dish which I had never tasted before. It comprised flavored rissotto rice covered with thin slices of aubergines (brinjals) and then steam cooked within a mould. It looked a lot like the Malayali Kuttu. It was a bit bland for my liking though.
My only grouse with the restuarant was about the main course. Since it was brought to you, you could not determine at the speed you would like it to be served. So after you were done with the starters, you would have to wait till the waiter deemed it important to come and serve you. Therefore it was not surprising that the pasta, when it was offered to me, was pretty cold. Also, for an Italian restaurant, it is surprising that they offered only two types of pasta: penne and sphaghetti.
The dessert platter was good with several options.
This place is perfect for celebrating an occassion or to spend some quiet and quality time with a special someone. But be prepared for a huge hole in the wallet. The buffet is priced at Rs 1500, per head.

my mom makes better pasta

For an fine Italian Restaurant, the food is okay. Prices are steep, but the service is great. Your server pays quite a bit of attention to you and your needs. It's more of a place to go to say you've been, than it is to say you've had a fine dining experience. We sat next to Anupam Kher's wife and son, so I'm assuming you will expect to see a celebrity or two on weekends. I wasn't impressed with the menu or the pasta dish I ordered...my mom makes a better pizza at home!
