Why the fuss ??

Finally there is a Mexican restaurant I thought and went to visit. We went on a Sat night at about 11:30 - 12. The place was pretty empty that time.

Ambience: They have 2 sections downstairs and upstairs. There is a movie screen where they play movies (guess they are Spanish). While it is a very novel idea I don't know how many people like to eat watching blood and gore on the screen. I didn't. The music was good though, peppy.

Drinks: They dont serve alcohol yet so we skipped drinks.

Food: They serve both Mexican and Continental. One side has the Mexican menu and the other Continental. Kinda cute. But somehow it has the same old options and nothing really sounded very interesting.

We decided to eat light so ordered a feta cheese Brushetta, a salad and potato wedges (can't recall what the dish was called). I mean how wrong can one go with Bruschetta right ? Wrong. It was possibly the worst Ive had. Bread with a layer of some brown looking stuff (looked very unappetizing) and feta cheese (which was the only saving grace). The salad was vegetables with an overdose of olive oil. The sundried tomatoes were really hard. Never seen them that bad.

Service: Service is great. The staff is very courteous and helpful

Overall one can totally skip it. Might go there once more to try the real mexican stuff and see if it is worth the hype or not.

Finally !

I have been wanting to go to Sammy Sosa for almost 3 months now .. but considering it was all the way in Andheri, I din't do so before. But this weekend I finally got myself to go there and feast on some yummilicious mexican food!

We started with mocktails made perfectly to our taste , a peach drink for me and a gauva chi for my friend. Followed by chicken wings (starters) which were served in a proption more than sufficient for the both of us and with a good amount of minced chicken filling. The main course was Chicken enchilladas with mexican rice and oh boy.. what a feast it was! And the perfect mexican meal ended with mind blowing dessert - mud pie! (Choclate brownie with ice cream).

No denying that the food is BRILLIANT! Kudos to the chef and the people behind the restaurant to put in so much thought into the menu!

But what added to this experience and made it more delighful was - The ambience.. the warmth of the staff and the owners, the table mats with mexican trivia and games related to the same, the decor, a mexican movie playin on the LCD and the costumes of the waiters.

All so well thought to, to make your dining experience COMPLETE!

Cheers to the owners of the place. And even though I stay in the other end of the city, I am surely going here more often!

Personal reccomendation - MUST TRY!

Worth a try

The burrp reviews prompted me to try out this place.

My ratings

Food quality - 3.5/5
Ambience - 3/5
Pricing - 2/5
Service - 4/5

What we had :

Three starters - Potato skins and two chicken skewers(chamuru & ??don't remmber name). Potato skins was good but had too little chicken for a dish which cost around ~180 The green sauce chicken skewers was good but the red sauce one was stricly average.

Mains - Mexican grilled chicken with rice. Pretty good and tasty although I had asked for a dish with no hint of sweetness and this did have it. Bad recommendation based on what I wanted.

Dessert - Mud pie was truly relishing and worth the 200 bucks we paid for it. Easily the best part of the meal.

Overall, I feel that a 20% reduction in price is definitely required to keep me going there.

This is a strictly one-time place as of now.

Gracias!! Sammy Sosa

Sammy Sosa is a small Mexican restaurant situated in the heart of Oshiwara in Andheri. From the outside, you will not notice the nicely done up interiors. I loved the look and the feel of the restaurant, the stained glass work, the tables, the chairs and the illusion of space when it is actually a small area to work with.

The menu is descriptive, which is good, since most people are not familiar with mexican cuisine. It helps to understand what you are eating. We tried the Kababs, which is done in a Mexican-Iranian way, and the Mama sita chika; which was chicken. Both the entres were presented really well, and served good portions of chicken/rice/potatoes. What was really good was that the food wasn't "Indianized" to suit the Indian taste buds and actually tasted like Mexican Cuisine.
The food is priced above average, but I dont feel this is wrong
as I feel the owner Mr.Samrat is trying to cater to a niche market, and doing a good job.

The best part of the meal was dessert, we ordered sweet pancakes, and it was heaven!! It was so well done, if i wasn't already full with the entre meal, I would have called for more. I might just go to eat dessert to Sammy Sosas.

Overall, this is a wonderful please to have good mexican food. Mumbai needs more restaurants like this that serve specific cuisines, and not all chinese, indian, south indian, mughlai et al under one roof. I wish the restaurant success!

good, plenty of potential as well

Sammy Sosa isn't an easy to place to get to if you live in South Bombay. Had a meeting that end and was able to make it for a late lunch.

The place is small but fairly bright, they seem to have the Mexican kitsch down pat. Seating is tight but comfortable and the whole place has a young vibe.

They dont have a liquor license but they could teach a thing or two about how a Margarita is made to just about any bartender in the city (FROZEN is where its at) just wish they were bigger.

The food is good, part authentic part Indian and part fusion. We got the nachos and the potato skins. Both were okay, not exactly tex-mex all the way but strong dishes nonetheless. Nachos should have been soft tortilla rather than chips based.

The main course was the enchilada which was excellent, i wish they could do up some mexican rice and refried beans on the side which would complete the platter. The other dish was the verdura verde, not bad but too much going on.

The dessert was not very mexican, honey and pistachio crepes. Top notch.

They said part of their problems is sourcing the avocados for the guacamole which in some cases they have to avoid serving if its not up to the mark. Similar issues with sourcing the right kind of beans and peppers. They do use Monterrey Jack cheese.

Overall the service was quick, the food was good and they are a young lot making a serious effort. hopefully things will get even stronger.

Plenty more things to try, hopefully i can swing another meeting in Andheri!
