...and Oh! Calcutta fits the bill very well indeed. I am a regular visitor to this little establishment tucked away in the grimy lanes of Tardeo. The friendly waiters and staff know their food and can often be seen guiding the "non-bengali's" on the best/the more traditional combination of food.
I went there last week with a vegetarian friend and was convinced that it would be a disappointment since they do have a limited vegetarian fare. However, I wasnt disappointed because the bhaja moonger dal with chochori and fragrant basmati rice with a side of aloo bhaja was spot on. The aloo bhaja was perhaps too crisp and to thinly sliced by my standards (although "kati aloo bhajas" sliced thinly is my favourite type of aloo bhaja). We settled for rosogollar payesh for dessert which was outstanding as always.
My favourite dishes at Oh! Calcutta are the shorshe maach dishes (steamed fish cooked in a gorgeous mustard sauce) and their chingri malai curry (prawns cooked in coconut milk)- if you have a penchant for fish, these dishes are a must try!
The dim lighting and stark decor could do with a make over. I love the pencil sketches of landmarks around Kolkata. It remains my favourite place to indulge in some simple, "home made" bengali fare!

Like a lot of Bengali's whenever I go to a Bengali/Bangladeshi restaurant, that little voice in the back of my head always says "why buy is in a restaurants when you can make it at home?" but I have to say that Oh! Calcutta scores well. In particular, mustard fish dishes are spot on and highly authentic. The other nice thing is that most of the staff speak Bengali and so you can place your orders in the native tongue. The Prawn dishes are also excellent and the Basmati rice they use is fragrant and delicate. I'm not too sold on the interior lighting and decor. It looks fine and by no means shabby inside but it's nothing to write home about. The staff are very attentive and they're also knowledgeable about the food they serve which is a bonus. Their traditional Bengali desserts also passed the test. If you're Bengali and yearning some traditional Bengali food which you cannot or can't be bothered to make and if you don't mind being a little extravagant with your bank balance now and again, then Oh! Calcutta come highly recommended. It's a good family restaurant and isn't very noisy inside. The clientèle who visit this restaurant also tend to be rather well mannered and respectful to the other guests around them. Top marks.

Ok, I am going to probably get slaughtered for this. The wife and i went to Oh Calcutta for our very first attempt at Bengali cuisine and it was an unmitigated disaster.
The place itself is no great shakes,The lighting is also dimmish yellow its just so very 1960's but it works for the place.
The cocktail my wife tried, some lemon thing was horrendous. We started with some home made cheese with mung dal and something else which translate to paneer croquettes. Both were fairly similar one bengali the other not equally average. So go figure.
After a fair amount of debating we went in for something traditional again. Apparently was a chana patty in some sauce with steamed rice.
I think we only got in about 2 spoons, ate the pappads and fled.
The food just wasnt up to the mark. Maybe my palate is just all wrong for indigenous cuisine but that stuff just didnt taste right. The service was ok but the folks could have helped us out and didnt.
Dont get me wrong, maybe it takes getting used to besides, we couldnt try and of the fish and meat coz were veggies.
So give it a try if its your thing. It sure aint mine.
Damage 2000 without drinks (2 starters, main course, rice)

excellent food, always good and always the great taste that you remember. even for a non-bengali & a vegetarian at that, the food is appetising, memorable and keeps you wanting more. servings are just right and reasonably priced. the cholar dal is a must try as is the aloo dum and the luchi. other preparations with cauliflower are equally good.
while its a quiet place and you can't expect to have a 'hip' place to hang out, its a must visit for the food. service is good, staff are affable and helpful.

Forget the Aloo poshto, Pakwan dal, Chingri malai curry (tad too sweet), Luchis etc on their menu all of these items are too good. But I tell you go straight for their Bhappa Hilsa, extremely fresh Hilsa fish steamed to perfection in mustard paste served with steamed rice along with a perfectly pungent and delicately spiced mustard gravy to give the rice the extra moistness. I say the Bhapa Hilsa justifies the price of RS 600 per portion but not the other items as I found them expensive in comparision to the portion and presentation. Over all a great place to visit for authentic Bengali cuisine.
