Delicious

I cannot vouch for any authenticity, in food or decor, as I know nothing of what is authentically Kashmiri. What I can say is that my lunch at KongPush is one of the best meals I have had in a restaurant in Mumbai since I moved here last winter. Every single dish was prepared with thought and care; the sauces were velvety, the meat and vegetables perfectly tender. Flavors were balanced, subtle and complex, and the seasoning was spot on. I do not think it matters what you try when you are there, because the menu is focused and the kitchen clearly skilled. But if you want direction, put yourself in the hands of the owner, Sunil Mattoo, who will deftly and intelligently guide you through the menu. The menu is reasonably priced, but is remarkably inexpensive for the level of skill with which the food is prepared. This review may sound a bit over the top, but it really is not hyperbole. I loved the food here, and if I did not live so far away in south Mumbai, I would eat here several times a week. I you live anywhere close, allow me to live vicariously through you: go and enjoy it.

KongPoush, Kashmiri cuisine – Truly worth it!

This was a long pending visit and boy it truly was worth it! It was some months back that we had read a Sunday Mid-day review which gave KongPoush, Kashmiri cuisine a 9 out of 10 in its ratings and we gang of foodie friends wanted to go and experience it first hand, and once we all had time together (which was on 31st Dec 2008) we ventured to this Kashmiri restaurant for a leisurely dinner.
We opted for the Shikara seating upstairs and as we lounged on the comfortable gaddas we ordered for three Wazwaan thaals and one veg Dai Batta Thal. As we waited for the thaals we asked for soups - Saat Rass (Mutton Soup) & Tamatar Rass to go with starters Kokur Kanti (Chicken) & Nadir Monj (deliciously spicy lotus stems). The service was fast and efficient and when we requested that they get the thaals after we finish the soup and starters the staff immediately understood and obliged.
So we could relish our soup and starters before digging in at the traditional thaals which are a complete meal in itself. The Wazwaan thaal at KongPoush comprises of some of the best dishes from the famous 36 course meal Wazwaan, mostly served at Kashmiri Muslim marriages so we got to taste authentic Seekh Kabab, Goshtaba, Rista, Methi Maaz, Tamatar Kokur, etc while the Dai Batta Thaal, a special vegetarian thaal served during the rituals of a Kashmiri Pandit marriage which is shared by the newly married couple had Nadir Palak Tikki, Tamatar Chamman / Chamman Qaliya, Dum Oluv, Nadir Palak, Tsok Wangun, Razmah, etc… Both the thaals came with generous amounts of rotis, rice, dahi, phirni & kahwa.
What more could we ask for? The quantity as well as quality left us astounded as it was just too good to be true. It was more than what we had expected! The food, service and ambience had us totally floored and KongPoush for Kashmiri cuisine will be on the top on our list of value for food recommendations. It truly deserves the Burrp award that was displayed prominently at the entrance and from our side we gang of four would like to give this unique restaurant 10 out of 10! It was a lovely New Year experience for us.

1 of the best restaurant in Goregaon

Hi frnds,
Visited this place on a frnds birthday after going through the above reviews. Tough was a bit risky as i had recommended this place.
Frm the outside it looked like a very small restaurant, but after going upstairs it was a completely different scenario. The ambience is excellent so as the food.Serves authentic Kashmiri cusine. It is a must visit. It wasn't crowded on a Sunday evening as it is unknown to many.

My recommendation is definitely worth a try. Cheers !!!

KongPoush - Kashmiri cuisine at its BEST!

I was surprised to see a not so good review of our fav restaurant KongPoush after the 4 /5 stars that have been posted by some of our friends who by the way are non-Kashmiris and so am I but I love the Kashmiri food that is served here and stand by to the earlier reviews which are all praise for it too.
So last we (a group of 6 non-Kashmiris) made our 4th visit to KongPoush since it opened praying that the food quality had not changed. We booked our regular shikara upstairs and reached to find the place buzzing in the evening. We shot off our order for Kahwa which was perfect to set the mood for the evening. The starters followed – chicken kanti and seekh kabab in non-veg and the ever loved nadir palak tikki for the vegetarians.
For the main course nothing but the best which meant goshtaba, roganjosh, dum aloo, rajma (which is just too perfect everytime we have tried it) and just to check on the muts (never tasted better!) which was criticized in the 2 star review by our friend who was expecting dry fruits in Kashmiri dishes which is a wrong notion on the part of all those people who have tasted Kashmiri food in udipis and other restaurants. Rice goes the best with Kashmiri cuisine so we had our fav saffron rice.
Desserts comprised of shufta (something you don’t find a replica of in any other cuisine) and the phirni was sweet to perfection as usual (trust me it is much better than most other famous restaurants). A second round of kahwa was a must (as we all love it so much and as it is good for digestion too).
We left KongPoush fully satiated and thankful that it has retained the high food standards and quality that it’s been uniquely famous for.

Not so great !!

After mostly 4/5 star reviews, I feel a little weird to be giving a 2 star review - but then I feel this place should be reviewed from the eyes of a non-Kashmiri - someone who has never been exposed to Kashmiri cuisine before.
The ambience - especially the upper level comes as a pleasant surprise after the quite underwhelming lower level. The shikharas and the wooden decor all around are very nice touches - and the option at some tables to sit with your feet up , like in a bed, is very comfortable.
However the decor and ambience can only get you so far. The food unfortunately wasnt as pleasing as the surroundings. We started off with a veg and a non-veg soup. (Its a little difficult to remember the exact names names, but I will try to describe the dishes so that you cant spot which ones when you go through their menu)
The non veg soup was the mutton one - it was somewhat similar to shorbas that we have - except that the dominant flavor was of cinnamon (but not overpowering). The mix veg soup was however a total disaster - completely tasteless.
After that we tried out two starters. The non-veg one was a chicken stir fried with tomatoes and onions - while good, was not unique - tasted somewhat like chicken tikka with lots of fried onions and tomatoes. However it was the highpoint of the meal. The veg starter was flat crisp 'matthhi' like things made of lotus stem crushed, coated with rice flour and fried. It wasnt bad, but very dry and not too flavourful ...
To wash everything down, we ordered the Kashmiri version of iced tea, which continued with the cinnamon affair. The cinnamon flavor was again dominant - but not unpalatable.
Main course we tried out Muts - thats mutton mince balls in a red hot gravy. The veggies tried out Methi Paneer and Kashmiri Rajma, which was highly recommended by our waiter. While the paneer was deemed decent, the rajma was again downright bland !! And the muts - well there were exactly four smallish koftas with a lot of red gravy, which was quite mild to taste. Nothing remotely hot but just reeking of cinnamon - whats with the cinnamon overdose ??
Didnt try out rice items, so cant comment on the biryanis or pulavs.
We tried all the desserts on the menu - the Shufta sounded promising and turned out pretty good. The gulab jamuns were pretty decent too but the phirni was again disappointing - downright bland !! I mean I know phirni is supposed to be delicately sweet but this was like eating spoonfuls of atta-milk paste !!

Worth one visit for the decor and trying out Kashmiri cuisine but I suspect that if you arent exposed to it, you might not find it remarkable

(One more point - if you are expecting dry fruits in each and every preparation, you have got it wrong. The waiter was emphatic that none of the dishes have dry fruits apart from the desserts)
