Burrp time!

This small place packs in 20-25 people at a time and keeps the rest waiting outside hungry for their Lunch to be served... by the time u sneak in the chances are that the menu board will have quite a few items striked out of the list. So land there well in advance to have some tasty Goan food.
Ambience: Ok (space restriction). Service: Ok (too busy at peak time), Price: very affordable, Overall: If u like trying out new joints. This place is a must visit. Stay Hungry. burrp!

Goan cuisine, et cetera

Blink-and-you-miss-it big, five tables seating six each and a lunch-hour rush at least triple of that, the manager at ease with his laconic self, with the waiters acting as though words are charged, a chalkboard on the adjacent wall breaking your heart with its crosses rising by the hour and a basin which doesn't let you bend and wash at the same time! This place would easily give an udipi place a run for its money. (and win, on account of its menu if not anything else)
But all that not withstanding, anyone out there appreciating goan cuisine must give this place a try.
The time you visit this place makes a big difference. As mentioned earlier, the chalk crosses on the menu board, announcing the unavailability of that particular item, aren't a welcome sign for any food-lover. So try timing the visit anywhere close to noon or 1900hrs for a menu befitting your appetite and curiosity.(and also to get a seat!)
The menu explores the goan cuisine like none other. It serves all kinds of meat, including pork, bacon, beef along with the usual chicken and mutton and of course, sea food. The main attraction has got to be the 'goan sausages chilly fry', which is pork sausages served in a peculiar sour-yest-spicy viscous gravy. But, this dish comes along with a statutory warning, that its made for those broad-minded fellows who rate their taste-buds highly amongst the senses. This 'pork pickle' begs for patience on your part, and doesn't disappoint those who stick by.
The other delicacies include vindaloo and sorpotel preparations of pork and chicken, without which no goan cuisine can be announced complete. But I've had better. The chicken roast and chicken fry is something to die for. Even though I haven't tried out the sea food out here (can't get better than me mum's), first hand information from reliable sources claim it to be a hit. Also, its the only place i know which serves that all too famous English breakfast, bacon, pork sausages and perfectly cooked egg, sunny-side-up! That too under 50bucks!
Speaking of prices, this place scores high in that respect. All the items fall in the range of Rs.35 to Rs.70. I happened to have lunch at this very place today, and four people, proud of their eating prowess, had a filling lunch with two helpings et. al., and the bill came upto Rs.300!
So I positively recommend new martins to people in search of the perfect goan cuisine, and otherwise.

Worst Food Ever!!!!

I had heard about this place and had high hopes of getting some decent Goan home style food. I went along with a Goan friend at around 6.30pm when they had just opened.

The restaurant is very small and consists of wooden bench-like seating and very basic decor. There was a grumpy man on the desk who grunted when we asked if the full menu was available!!

The menu is written on a blackboard in chalk and at first glance looks ok-prices are around Rs 30-45 mostly. We ordered Pork Sorpatel (Rs 45)and fried Surmai(Rs 35). The food arrived quited quickly and the sorpatel looked an ok sized portion and was served with sliced pao. I didn't like the sorpatel at all and left it to my friend to finish it off!!! The surmai came and consisted of 1 overcooked, very red slice of surmai. It tasted very dry and did not have enough salt in the masala and was definately not worth the price at all. We then ordered Pork Roast (Rs 35 I think!)-this came and consisted of 2 slices of pork which tasted more boiled than roasted, very bland and very tough, could hardly cut it to eat. It came on a plate with a slice of partially boiled potato, a few slices of unwashed carrots and a bit of tomato and a dish full of a yellow oily liquid with a few flies and black hair-hopefully from the pig-in it! It tasted bland and greasy. Pao was also provided but we did not end up eating as the gravy was too foul to eat!

I would never go back to this restaurant or recommend it and have to say it was the worst food that I can ever remember having in a restaurant. I have rated it as a 1 Star as there is not a half Star!!!

New Martin's

Iv been told that you get the best steak in Mumbai at New Martin's though I must say that I beg to differ. On the surface it seems that nothing can go wrong. It appears to be a no nonsence kind of place with its focus on the food. The restaurant is pretty small and has the classic wooden benches which find at most Udipi restaurants. There menu is written on a chalk board and its pretty simple. There arent a 100 items on the menu to confuse you. Dont make the mistake of looking into the kitchen because its not really that clean looking and you may not want to eat here if you look into it while seated at the last table,.Comming to the food Id say I was dissapointed. While the food wasnt bad or anytihng its certainly not anything worth going out of your way to come and get. While I was expecting a lot with the steak Ill have to say that I was pretty dissapointed. The other dish we ordered was a little better though I forgot what it was. I finished the meal with a custard and jelly which was actually the best part of the meal surprizingly The service like the restaurant is quick and no nonsence. Like most restaurants of this type the waiters know the menu inside out and are ready with suggestions. The best part about this place is its value. I havent seen prices like Martin's anywhere in Mumbai. Everytihng here is dirt cheap and you could probably have a 2 course meal for around 50 ruppes including a drink.
