We had a very good meal for two with a sushi platter, one tempura, one cha-soba and one sea bass teppanyaki.
As far as Japanese food goes, this place is definitely one of the best around with the freshest of ingredients that are apparently flown in everyday from around the world.
The prices are what you would probably expect in a top notch Taj restaurant. But I suspect that what you're getting in return for the price is just the Taj brand and the fact that the ingredients are being flown in. The restaurant is actually called 'Wasabi by Morimoto', Morimoto being a celebrity chef who's even run a TV show - but I didn't think the food had any of that 'celebrity chef' touch to it. In fact, I'm beginning to suspect that it's the best only by default - that the other restaurants are a notch lower simply because of the difficulty in managing ingredients related to Japanese food.
The restaurant itself was a touch cramped and a bit 'pop'. There's something off with their seating plan though... when we called ahead to reserve a table, we were told that only the teppanyaki counter was available and that everywhere else was booked through for the night. But pretty soon after we were seated, we could see two good empty tables, and a lot of seats by the sushi counter. Maybe they reserve them just in case a Mumbai celeb rushes in unannounced!
The service from the waiters was also not exactly expected from that of top notch international hotels. Frankly, it seemed the same as what you would expect in a standard fine dining restaurant. I've seen better service in Taj Coromandel, Chennai, so am sure this is not the standard expected by Taj.
Definitely something to do at least once in your lifetime, but don't expect a major extravaganza, and you'll be fine. You'll know what a Wasabi actually looks like, you'll admire the energy and the skill of the teppanyaki chef, and you'll get some good Japanese fare. Oh, and save up for the visit.

Well.... just to give you an idea of how good this place is.... Nobu is an Internationally renowned Japanese chain... Chef Morimoto used to be the head chef in one.,.. till the Taj lured him to Mumbai. And i am thankful they did. The food is incredible... most of the ingredients are flown in daily from Europe and Australia. Recommendations - the Beef and White Fish Carpaccio are outstanding, The shrimp tempura is delectable and you have to try the Sushi platter... the spicy tuna being the highlight. Add some chilled sake to that and your meal is complete. The best part is that the food does not weigh you down...ideal for a early weekend dinner before heading out to Prive or Shiro.
I would eat here everyday, if I got a loan from the world bank.

What can I say? Chef Morimoto (of Iron Chef fame) owned sushi joint at the Taj Mahal Palace is true to the core. No chicken sushi, or other weird Indian-ized concoctions. Pure fresh sashimi also available and the rolls are to die for. The only drawback? Price, price, price. Although I do not get much of an opportunity to head to town, even a once in a month trip breaks my purse.
