Since I was not born in the suburbs of Guangzhou I am generally clueless when people talk about the word authentic in their Chinese food reviews.
I understand ingredients, presentation and taste - and anything that goes down as tastefully as the time-honoured mughlai and north Indian food that i grew up with, is welcome.
China Garden is welcome! I just loved the food - from dimsums and prawns to lamb and rice and desserts. Our experience just got better and better during the course of our dinner.
Succulent, tender portions, mild on flavour but very tasty. The names were technical and mostly suggested by their staff so I dont recollect exact names. It is one of those places where you can expect everything to taste good.
It is a place where you would like to go more than once. I went for dinner with a friend who had memories of visiting the restaurant as a kid and he kept singing 'dont be a noodle ... be a smoooodle' I dont know why :-) Probably a hard day at work :-)
Their staff is very attentive - as soon as your head starts to move in anticipation, someone comes to assist you :-)
The bar is well stacked - decor and ambience is also nice. Laughing Buddhas are big and funny. Overall, a very good experience in terms of food and service except some ...chin-wagging....noisy south bombay families who laugh so much ... as if they're playing a table to table competition :))

The China Garden at Kemps' Corner was always a hot favourite with us ever since it opened all those years ago. Being almost weekly diners, we were most disappointed when they had to shift out into the Mall. For several years we avoided the place till one day we just had to go there merely because they did serve the best noodles in town.
So now that it has returned to its place of birth, we couldn't be happier. This is now our tenth visit since the place re-opened at Om Chambers.
Dark yet not dingy, the ambience is pleasant. With red jaquard canopies looping the ceiling, a large flat screen tv on one wall gives it a sports bar-ish look. Initially, I was a bit disconcerted with the TV but realised that it can be quite a relief for people who don't have much to talk to each other or just use it as a spring board for further conversation. The bar was a buzz with people merrily (and getting merrier) waiting for the next sitting.
Checking out our reservation ( this is an absolute must - the earlier in the day the better ) the pleasant looking Chinese hostess escorted us to our table. At the first sitting you can distinctly hear foreign tongues as only foreigners can eat at this early hour of eight!
The service is a bit lack lustre though with the waiters actually hanging around waiting to be called rather than attending to you immediately.
We asked for non spicy food since keeping our overseas visitors in mind but the Captain suggested Pepper Chicken and some fish dish as starters . While both were yummy, the fish had generous amounts of chopped green chilli while the chicken was a fiery red. Of course our chief guest foreigner abandoned it after the first bite which left me to chomp through the rest. No complaints though except that my stomach was full with starters!
The rest of the table ordered Teppan Yaki prawns, Chicken and fried rice and a big bowl of noodles. Since I was already tanked up with the starters, I had to wash it down with clear chicken soup.
While the food was tasty, I do wish the Captain had made better suggestions and had served the food in order of preference. For instance, I who was the least hungry was served the soup first and had to wait for the chief guest whose preference was the Teppan Yaki prawns to be served last! So my poor chief guest had to gulp down his steaming hot prawn so that I could quickly sip my hot soup that had become tepid in the mean time.
Despite this I would recommend the place because the food really never fails to please. The ambient noise can get a bit loud but it adds to the charm of the place - classy and noisy - a place where you can enjoy yourself without stepping on your neighbouring table's sensibilities.

Restaurant - China Garden
Location - Om Chambers, Kemps Corner
Meal - Dinner
Company - Ze Wife
Experience - It was a pleasure returning to China Garden after almost the best part of a decade. i just refused to go to CG in a mall! Anyway, the new decor is kind of cool, very swanky, dark lighting, no lower level however. The decor is fitting the times i guess. We had a table for 8pm and we got there and were seated at 8pm on time ( i remember a time when you would have to wait 30 mins for a table even after u showed up on time)
Drinks - Chardonnay, Bloody Mary both drinks were allright, the chardonnay went great with the food.
Meal- Tom Yum Soup, very good, slightly on the spicy side but full of good taste, not too lemony or gingery.
The Appetizers were Steamed Wontons (half portion 8 vs 12 in the full) and the Onion Pancakes. The wontons were alright, very generic, however the pancake was fantastic, extremely light, with a liberal helping of condiments and eating them one bite after another, they jammed very well.
The Main course was veggies & cottage cheese in schezuan sauce, and a half portion of teppan soba noodles. The Noodles were ok, almost hakkaish while the the veggies were great, the sauce seemed to have two different layers, one not spicy the other fiery, which was interesting and it allowed the spiciness to build rather than be there on the outset.
Overall a good meal, almost great but for 2 things - one we weren't very adventurous with the food and played it safe, as well as some things like the noodles and wantons being very generic (Still good) in their taste.
They have Dim Sum Lunches as well Mon-Fri which is cool coz i can walk it up :)
Service was pretty good attentive, quick and it was good to see Mr.Nelson Wang in attendance just like old times.
