Thai me up

Thai Pavilion exceeds where we would expect it to exceed being a Taj associated restaurant - ambiance, service, style, and oomph. The renovated jewel of a place has a few focal points of its newfound ambiance: what I assumed to be Thai wooden carvings on all the walls, a barstool eating section adorned with small clay pots hanging from the ceiling; and a fancy see-through, visible wine cellar right as you walk in.

The food was solid. I wouldn't say that it was amazingly authentic Thai food, but they have an impressive spread of dishes. From the usual suspects, such as Som Tam (raw papaya salad), the coconut based curries (Red, Green, Yellow) and Pad Thai Noodles; to the more exotic dishes, such as a Foie Gras with Mango Puree, to a Steamed Sea Bass wrapped in Rice Noodles, Red Snapper with a Red Curry Paste, Soft Shell Crabs with Pomelo fruit, etc.

The service was the high-point of the night. Our waiter was a sweet gentleman by the name of Joe. He made great recommendations and generally ensured a very pleasant night for us. Our last order of the night was a shot espresso, which I usually expect with either a piece of lemon rind, or a shot of cold water with a lemon rind in it. I made sure to ask him to bring either out while ordering the espresso, but this was clearly a never-heard request from Joe. He not only happily obliged and delivered, but he actually asked us where this was traditionally done, why it was done, and whether they should consider doing it for all espresso shot orders. That was quite amazing to me - real time feedback being absorbed by the restaurant service staff.

This is a Taj restaurant, so 'nuff said regarding prices.

Kudos to Thai Pavilion for perhaps the best attempt at authentic Thai. Their stiffest competition interestingly enough probably comes from Seven Spices, the Thai joint inside the Park Plaza Hotel in the Royal Palms property in Goregaon (E).

Thumbs Up To The NTP

I was always a fan of the Old Thai Pavilion ("OTP") and was worried what it would be like the New Thai Pavilion ("NTP") in its new avatar when I went there for dinner yesterday esp since I had read a few bad/average reviews of the NTP since its relaunch in November.

The two of us had an absolutely wonderful meal - good food, great service and a wonderful ambiance. We had the tom yum soup, phad thai, green curry, snapper with curry paste and morning glory. Decent servings which did not leave enough space for dessert.

Pretty good!

Disclaimer: You better have an advance booking for a table. For the high bar stools, you could just walk in!

We went here for out marriage anniversary. It started on a not-so-good note when I called them on a Thursday evening for reservation. I was quite confident I would get it. But the lady on the other side said they were completely sold out. Then I had to use the contact of the head chef who assured us he would accomodate us.

So we sat on the bar stools, which was not bad after all! We were welcomed by the chef and in general treated very well by the entire staff. The ambience of the place is great!

We had all vegetarian food. I had a tom yum soup, we shared a pad thai and red curry. The quantity was pretty decent for the two of us. We didn't try any appetizers though. We loved the Pad Thai. We thought the red curry was not as authentic as we would have liked it.

Our waiter Naved was nice and friendly. He was proactive in giving us suggestions, which we both appreciated. We were really looking forward to having sticky rice with mango as dessert. Unfortunately, they don't have it. It seems they've discontinued it after renovation. So he offered us another dessert (don't remember the name) it had chestnuts in coconut milk. We found it extra extra sweet.

All in all, we had a good time!

somewhat of a dissapointment

I always heard that this place was where one goes for authentic Thai food...and being a die hard fan of Thai... I literally have been calling every week to find out when it was opening.

The plus points: The "New Thai Pavillion" has a nice decor (kind of cliched though, almost looks like a cheaper and smaller version of China House), excellent service and I guess that is about it.

Lets get to the food...I always say if a Thai restaraunt can get the Som Tum (Papaya Salad), Tom Yum Soup, Pad Thai right then well it should be good. The Papaya Salad was nice but it comes with no grilled shrimp, i requested grilled shrimp but it was a hassle. The Tom Yum was above average but needed a little tweaking (sugar & fish sauce) and the Pad Thai was a severe let down (much better than Thai Ban).

I also had the starters...beef satay which were nice but didnt taste like satay, the red curry chicken(very disappointing) and the green curry chicken (pretty decent but lacking vegetables)

Small details were missing in the food like bean sprouts and lemon wedges with the Pad Thai & the cucumber salad in sweet chilli and fish sauce that is a staple with all Thai Food.

To be honest....I would say it is probably Bombay's best, and I would go again because I guess mediocre Thai food is better than nothing...it just frustrates me...why cant we get some real Thai food in Mumbai....I mean we are so close to the place, we have similar local ingredients (some) and things get flown in daily...all you need is a couple of street chefs and voila....sorry for the banter I just don’t understand what is the point of spending tons of money on the interior of a restaurant and not fine tuning the food to what it should be...I would have rather preferred the same old interior and allocating the budgets to have real Thai chefs...maybe im just barking and well they have opted to localize to the local palette……

much better

was at Thai pavilion recently and this time we didn't play around too much with the menu. went straight for the som tam papaya salad which was wok.

for the main course we got the red and green curries with white rice which was excellent.

the red curry is slightly fiery but still a markedly different from the green.

the green curry was unlike any ive had (except here) it was slightly spicy but def had more of a taste when compared to the red which offered more of a kick.

a good meal but i wouldnt want to do just curries again, so i hope that the Thai Pavilion has gotten its act together on the rest of the menu.

the ambience is very in the very generic 5 star hotel does a thai rest motif, cool, comfy and classy nonetheless but not much character.

service was excellent.
