Definitely Not Worth a Visit - Ever

Papa Pancho used to be earlier known as Mista Paaji. All that I can say is that when bad incidents happen not once, not twice but three times, then such a place is certainly not worth visiting thereafter, for life.
The first instance was , when we decided to take a group of around 12 people to papa pancho for dinner. Everything was fine until the waiter got 4 wrong orders from the total placed. Instead of apologising for his error, he started insisting that he had got the ’very’ order we had placed in the first place. Then after a huge uproar from our side, we finally made him realize the error of his ways.
The second incident happened while I was visiting with a friend. We had ordered a few pegs of alcohol and a couple of starters. Eventually, we asked for the bill and paid the same. Suddenly my friend expressed a desire for another round of drinks... one for the road of sorts. I therefore called the waiter again and requested him to get us another round of drinks with a separate bill for the same. Imagine our shock, when the waiter muttered in front of us "Phirse peene baithna tha, toh pehle kyon nahin bola? Baar baar order de rahe hain!!!" Can you imagine a waiter making a statement like this? This time, I decided to raise my voice, after which the manager came running and apologised to us. She assured us that such an incident would never every happen again.
The third incident occured a couple of weeks back. We were a group of 4, having whisky pegs. As a rule, we always keep a count of the pegs consumed, for it is a well known fact that hotels are never to be trusted in this regard. Finally when we called for the bill, we were given 2 bills... one was with the actual number of pegs we had consumed, while the other mentioned 4 additional pegs. When we objected to this, the manager (the manager changes every week at this place and so does the staff), came over and said that they had forgotten to include the 4 pegs, which was why a second bill was made. Inspite of us trying to explain that the 4 pegs were not right, the staff were adamant and started speaking very rudely to our group. Eventually, the manager called up the owner, who was rude just like his staff. He informed us that their system was perfect and that we must pay whatever the bill. First we decided to complain to the police. But then having second thoughts as to how much of our time would be wasted, we just threw the money on the managers face and walked off.
That day, standing outside Papa Pancho, we took a vow that we would never enter this place, even if it were the last remaining restaurant left on this planet.

Decline and demise of a unique eating experience

Why does this always happen? You treasure an eating place - a restaurant that has something special about it. An item on the menu perhaps, or the excellent service. And so it was with Papa Pancho in Bandra, and its affiliate, Mista Paaji in Versova, which is also now called Papa Pancho.

Monday evening, my wife's mum's in town, so we decide to all go out for a nice dinner. We've been to Mista Paaji before, and I was quite the regular at Papa Pancho when I lived in Bandra. So we chose the newly rechristened Papa Pancho in Versova. We'd never been there since the renaming, though we'd ordered in a few times and the food was just as good.

We should have stuck to ordering in. The food's the same, the service isn't. Maybe I'm being anal, but when I arrive at the table I RESERVE, I expect the usual - glasses of water, paapad, onions, pudina chutney... MENUS. Without getting into the sordid details, let's just say that each of these items required me getting up, negotiating the atrocious crowd, and tapping a minimum of three waiters or the manager on the shoulder.

After much ordering, much reminding, and, by now, much snapping, things began to turn up... in bits and pieces. One item turned up sans the platter, drinks were brought much after the food, and the waiters generally looked completely lost in space.

Now the manager did explain to me that there was a serious shortage of staff. What little staff was there was inexperienced because apparently ALL the experienced waiters quit unexpectedly, recently. AND apparently, there was an unexpected increase in crowd on this night.

All of which are pointless excuses. The idea of running a service business is precisely that - that there will be problems, but they will be invisible to the end-customer.
And honestly, if you're under-staffed, cut down on the crowd till you make up the shortfall, or at least train the bunch that's there. Otherwise, you have no business seating more customers than you can serve. If they had refused my reservation last night, I might have been dining there tonight. Now I'm scared to ever go there after last night's experience.

It reached a point where we gave up and asked them to pack up everything so we could just finish dinner at home. Even that didn't seem to have much of an effect, since that only meant we had to wait endlessly for fingerbowls and the bill.

So, needless to say, there was no intention to tip them for their atrocious service, but I just didn't have the heart to stand around and wait for change. So congratulations, Papa Pancho - you drove out a party of diners and even managed to get a tip out of it!

Prahlad Kakkar would be so proud!
