After watching a great movie at Fun Republic, we decided to hit the China Gate nearby for a quick Sunday lunch. We decided on steamed veg suimai, veg talumein soup and a veg clear soup. The clear soup was excellent with some chinese greens and celery. The talumein was high on vinegar and a sweetish taste that didn't score with me.
The steamed suimai, while they were delicate and filled with veggies, the raw corn flour that the vegetables were coated with, were sticking to the mouth, spoiling the experience. I find it quite funny that every so called Chinese restaurant in Bombay finds its own versions of 'Chinese' sauces to go with the starters. This one had finely chopped coriander in sugar syrup - and a bhel kind of tamarind chutney which would be enough to throw a real Chinese chef into fits.
The main course consisted of coriander pot noodles, which looked highly appetizing and green, with lots of green vegetables, but one fork down and i realized that something was just not right with them. The noodles were overdone and gloopy, plus tons of baking soda added to the dish to retain the green -ness of the coriander sauce and the green vegetables. We all know the secret of a pinch of soda to retain the colour of greens, but please don't use soda as the main ingredient! I came here for food not for cleansing my stomach with soap! The mixed vegetables were in another corn-starchy red sauce that the server highly recommended, leading me to think it would be one of their specialties. Sadly, it was just another sauce that i wrote about earlier....lots of red chilli powder, minced garlic and cornstarch.
This along with a couple of fresh limes came to 1000 bucks. It has been a while that i felt so ripped off for eating poor quality food and thought of all the fresh ingredients I could have bought for that sum.
Anyway, lesson learnt, we wont be going back.
Service was ok and another negative is that the non smokers have no choice, the whole restaurant is open to smokers, so be ready to inhale the smoke if you go here.
I would have given this place one star but the extra star is for the good clear soup.

Like most 'Chinese restaurants' in India, this place too was disappointing in that the cuisine really isn't authentic. That's a huge dampener considering it costs so much and that most of their outlets have prime locations.
This three level restaurant can seat at least 100 people at a time comfortably. The seating and decor is pleasant and the washrooms are surprisingly well maintained. However, the staff and waiters aren't well-versed with the Chinese palates and can't do a thing for you if you're looking at customizing a dish.
You may want to avoid the crab here. At least it wasn't great the time I tried it. What you'll probably like is the Thai prawn curry and steamed rice (But then again you can't go too wrong with that).

I went there on my birthday wid a friend. The food was reliiiii good!!!! But the place is shittttt expensive... 1 soup and 2 starters got me down by Rs.650.... Also if u want a nice, calm place to relax China Gate is not a good option coz its pretty noisy!!

Hello
I think this place is like some of our bollywood's OVERLY hyped actress...
I know for sure, red box is good, caravan serai is good too, and even china gate (bandra) is better.
But this andheri branch is even worst than the road side Chinese stall...then WHY PAY MORE ?
===========================
Why is chinese and Italian food in India so expensive??
- when all you need are some boiled veg's and processed cheese to cook these 2 cuisines.

I totally agree with the below review about "broken glass",...Ask me... I had the same experience in J. W. Marriott (juhu)... the manager nor the staff bothered to say "sorry"... they took the glass away... and gave us a fresh glass.. (did not replenish the bottled water, which was paid for).

I had visited China Gate-Andheri on the 2nd with my family and friends for dinner. The palce was packed to the gills as usual..Lucky to get a place quickly...Did not know what was in store for us.....We were attended exactly 20 minutes later, when we placed our drinks order, they took ages to serve. The snacks arrived even before the drinks.
Finally when we had just settled down, comes the next bombshell...My Sister-in Law who was having a Cola, happend to chew something resembling an ice piece,,turns out to be a chunk of glass....Man that was absolutely shocking, and more worse was the attitude of the staff and managers...That was ultimate, they took it as casually as possible as if it is something which is not out of ordinary...The Manager,Mr.Dusmanta did not have the courtesy to even come and apologise...Not wanting to make ahue and cry we paid the bill and walked out.Even after calling their so called MD/GM,Mr.Mahesh, I have still to here from them..This is the kind of treatment being given to regular visitors to their so called reataurants.......NEVER EVER.....
