I was under the impression that my experience was a one-off case due to the Diwali rush. But after reading vishalsurana's review (http://mumbai.burrp.com/establishment/review/36n_5tz) I stand corrected.
We got the table promptly, but it wasn't until 10 mins + 2 reminders that we were offered the menu cards. Another 5 mins + reminder to serve us water.
The choice of dishes was nothing great. Fairly regular fair you'd expect to see at a run-of-the-mill Indian/Mughlai restaurant.
The food taste was average. Slightly below average, I'd say, for the price I was paying.
We ordered a cointreau on crushed ice and were served liquor with a big blob of ice floating in it. We had to literally explain was CRUSHED ice meant to the waiter, the manager, and the bartender!
The only thing good is the ambiance -- which literally bowls you over. That is the only thing that can probably explain such a high rating for Machaan.

This Thursday, we decided to have a small party (25 of us) on a Birthday ocassion and chose Machaan to be the venue. At the end of my dinnerparty i was fuming at myself why did i choose this venue in the first place.
Ambeience - Wow...
Food - Average to poor.
Menu spread - very poor.
Service - Pathetic.
In fact the service was so pathetic, that between one course of meal to another, we had to wait for at least 20-25 minutes.Every time we had to remind him to clear the plates and replace by new plates, which will take its own sweet time. I (as organiser of the party) had to request to serve water to 3-4 diffrent waiters and managers at least 5-6 times after which (20-25 mins) i was served water.
Food served was never hot. they served large quantities to the first person only to discover nothing left for last few in the party.
we lost our cool in the midway of party, only to be assured that we will be serviced well fro hereon. But few minutes later, the same story continued.
We all finished our meal together, but the finger bowl served to the first person and the last person had a gap of almost 20 mins.It seems they were short of bowls, so they had to rewash the earlier ones and serve it back to the last one. aweful...
Every one in the party was fuming, and what was supposed t be a great evening together, turned out to be a nightmare. After all left, i had a strong feedback to give to the manager there, but i was very sure i was puttng it all to deaf ears.
Guys go to machaan only if you want to spoil you time and money.

I visited Machan on saturday evening. The restaurant was jam packed and many people waiting for a table. I had a booking and was taken to my table promptly. Decor and concept is good but the place was loud with the typical Indian family scene. Definitely not the kind of atmosphere if you want to take out your girlfriend on the first date. We ordered some fish and chicken starters. They were pretty fresh and good. However the main course of chickek dal and rotis was a total let down. The roomali rotis were like papad and the chicken kurchan seemed like made out of leftovers. I complained to the steward and told him that I was going to write a review on his restaurant. That had a effect as the restaurant manager came to our table and brought complimentary chicken curry. The staff was extra courteous to us after that. However the bottom line is, mediocre food/expensive and over rated

had taken the family last night to machaan for dinner after reading lots of positive reviews on burrp but i have to admit that the food was not up to the mark.
we went for the buffet in which you get 12 starters, 2 soups, 2 biryanis, 5 main course dishes, rotis& naans and desserts like malpua, cake and fresh fruits.
the staters were very monotonous with most of them having a similar masala.the biryani was ok. but the main course as well as the desserts were a let down. to top it all the next day i had an upset stomach. all in all a forgetable experience.

The buffet at Machaan is total VFM. Here's why:
Ambience: Scores a good 4.5/5 especially for kids
Food quality: Kebabs and biryani alone are worth the price. In fact, we hardly eat anything else.
Service: Great. Deserves a 4.5/5
Very few buffets have good starters served fresh and hot. I've been to the Machaan buffet 4 times and the biryani and kebabs have been great always.
One sore point was that the prawn curry was quite average with the prawns being rubbery and with that 'frozen' seafood smell. Clearly avoidable.
