Hmmm... so when the owners of this establishment, after running it succesfully for decades, decided to shut shop due to poor revenues... it's most famous patron - Shri Balasaheb Thackeray thought to intervene. So after a very brief black-out, Dattatrey was open again for the junta.
There's nothing remotely good about the ambience, comfort et al about this place (compared to Chandragupt, Ovenfresh and Aaswad around)... but the authenticity of the food is what makes this a brilliant pick.
We tried 4 dishes.. all for 77 bucks! Puneri Misal, Kothmir Vadi, Thalipeeth, Batata Vada and some tea. The best of the lot - Batata Vada... Unlike most eateries and road-side stalls, the vadas here were crisp, spicy with minimum flour for the covering. The dry chutney served alongside made my day. You may also try the Kothmir Vadi for its softer taste.. It just melts in your mouth.
Dattatrey is no-no for dates, parties, celebrations and any such occasion that demands a classy and elegant atmosphere.. Come here for its traditional Maharashtrian cuisine (the vada in particular) and you may never want to have it elsewhere!
