Fantastic

I have been visiting this place for long but am not yet tired. The things I like are:
1. Very Hospitable Staff; almost eager to please
2. The food - It has been consistently good for so many years. I never had a poor experience here - from Rasam to Idli/Wada/Dosa to desserts and Coffee, everything is top class
3. Price - I dont know how they still manage to sell stuff so cheap. A Wada/Idli for 11/- and Dosa for under 20/-...this is a steal.
4. The repeat of Sambhar/Chutney is non-stop - they dont cringe like some other pricey restaurants.
5. Nice location

What they can improve upon:
1. Parking woes
2. Standard of Crockery, Cutlery
3. Seating comfort

All in all, this is the best south indian restaurant I have eaten in Mumbai. There are some other unknown but good ones in Matunga and some well known but ordinary ones all over the town but this place remains the best!!

Keep it up.

Best of South in Central Mumbai

Café Madras is a tricky destination if you don’t know your way around Kings Circle, Sion. Everytime we end up doing atleast 2 chakkars before we zero in on its location. This time around, I found a landmark – an eatery which has its name on a bright blue neon board with Reliance Communication written on it is where one takes the left.

Waiting before you get a table seems to be an accepted norm here. The young man at the door smiles sweetly & confirms that we should be seated in the next twenty minutes, which you so want to believe. Breakfast is easier to catch I guess, with less of a wait, depending on when you arrive.

Etched on the stone walls at the entrance are the words, Café Madras, open since 1940. It also says the establishment is shut on Mondays.

Fifty minutes later, out of which about forty eight were spent with my sister & I staring at the young man, came our table. Thoughts on ambience etc. etc. should all be discarded before you enter. The staff is extremely friendly, including the gentleman at the door. I liked the fact that they recommend stuff, rather than routinely take one’s order down.

Move over all you Udipi-style restaurants. The food is out of the world, and since I was brought up in Chennai, you can definitely take my word for it. This is probably the only place in Mumbai which serves authentic mulagapodi (commonly referred to as gun powder by most North Indians). We had a Raagi Rava Dosa, which makes it a tad healthier than the regular version made out of maida. The servings are not big, but enough to fill a normal appetite as most of the items are made with ghee.

We skipped desert, but ended the meal with lovely filter coffee, excessively sweet, but heavenly. Aaah!

The bill for four of us was Rs. 255/- and we had:

• 1 plate upma
• 1 plate rasam vada
• 3 rava dosas (one of them ragi)
• 2 ghee dosas
• 1 ginger lemon cooler & soft drink
• 2 filter coffees.

Only drawbacks:
• You guessed it, the waaaaait…
• The parking, our vehicle was at the other end of the world. If in a group, its best that atleast one gets off to get their name on the list, while the rest look for parking.

Overall the experience, as a true Chennai’ite would say, voray soopera!

All in favor? "AYE!"

Well I think this might possibly be my first five-star rating for any eatery yet.

I'm very picky when it comes to a whole bunch of criteria (the least of which is ambience).

I love the food (I love South Indian food).

I love the quality of hard work that goes into every single dish they put out.

I love the fact that very little has changed since forever.

I cannot stop raving about how VFM this is.

I would take anyone here who loves food, if they are disappointed, then I would suggest that they don't love food enough.

Nuff said.

Mysore Sada Dosas & Coffee

I can not help but agree with the other reviewers about Cafe Madras being the best South Indian restaurant in Mumbai. I've been frequenting this place since childhood for their Mysore Sada and Coffee. Love to go here early morning around 7 every time I am at home in Mumbai.

best south indian

Forget the ambience; look at the food, smell the aroma & dig in. Start with idli vada, followed by mysore or rava masala, if need more have a onion uttapam & end with 2 good filter coffees that should hold you till your next visit, maybe a month or two away.

But take a driver or an auto because there is absolutely zero parking.
