  • Cook's workshop - needs a serious overhaul. 2011-06-05

Wazwaan, an eatery standing on the off-roads of Marol, Military Rd. is one of the oldest and most famous restaurants of the locality. It's primary cuisine is North Indian food, but happily serves the beaten-to-death Chinese dishes too.
For a mild start, i'd say the ambiance of the place is pretty good, or shall I say was good, as long as it had the 1st floor of its building open for customers, with dim lights, decent interiors and those brass glasses. But for some reason now, it's shut, and all the visitors are left with now are a few odd tables, next to the 'cook's workshop', the kitchen.. so there's an occasional wave of heat that might embrace you every once in a while, as you're seated.
In its early years, the restaurant was indisputably the best food joint one could take one's family to, but by time, it has become a place that'd give you the jitters.
Living in the area and surviving a good deal on restaurant food, I can say that the restaurant at any day, takes at least 90 minutes to reach you, I remember once it took straight 2 hours and countless calls.. and a thousand lies of 'the delivery boy having lost path' as against the usual 'no delivery boy.'
Coming to the food, again, any item you order, the serving is insufficient for even one person (other than Chinese food involving rice.)
It's usually my last resort when I don't want to order from any other restaurants, 'cos it has fairly good Rumali rotis.. and equally bad tandoori rotis, that become unchewable (sic) after 10 minutes from the time they were made. Want to give someone a headache? try these rotis. Will be a good test of your oral health too.
Of allmy experiences, I'd write about my last one, I went there with my friends. it was the worst experience ever. The food in itself looked so shabby.. I tried a few Paneer items that barely looked like it.. for which I did get into a big argument with the management. Asking for one single tandoori roti at a time of 30% occupancy would take 20 minutes!
The management has no idea of serving food either, zero understanding of what should follow and what should come first.
Rice would precede starters, rotis would precede gravies.. so by the time you actually get the required combination, your food is cold and barely eatable.
So now I know that the problem lies in the cook's workshop itself, and not the lack of delivery boys or their ability to get lost on a path they tread tens of times in a day.
And what's really worse is the management is defiant about all these gaffes and wouldn't own up to it. No wonder it shows with the number of people now visiting the place.
My conclusion? An absolute thumbs down. it's time the owners/management do something to retain its previous charm. But till then, eat here if there's nowhere you can go, and do so with zero expectations.
