Why to go to this restaurant? were you and your parents does not get respect ??
As owner think that people are coming to him for quality of food if he dont give respect to customer then also they will come.
It was also my favourite restaurant but from today its better to go to other restaurants for south India like cafe maysore, ramashraya, mani's...
Owner does not give respect to senior citizen I think times food should not give awards on the quality of food but also the manner of owner. He speaks very ruf and i dont recommend this restraunts to people. Owner doesnt have Courtesy to talk with customers....
The cheapest and the best Dosas ever. In a small outlet, you will get the best and the most authentic South Indian food ever in your city. Stop having any other Dosa and come straight to Madras Cafe.
Apart from the Dosas, try the idlis and don't forget to try the filter coffee.
if you are in mumbai and u have not been to this place, you are definitely missing something...a must visit for every mumbaikar...not a high end posh place to do your dinners and lunches, but the authenticity it provides in its food is mindblowing...a typical south indian small eatery with all the walls ornated with various certificates and accolades they have received over years..despite being so famous, they have not tried to make it big or charge bombs for their food offerings...very reasonably priced food...must visit place...and pls dont leave that place without having their filter coffee..it is a coffee that will make you experience heaven...
Sunday Afternoon a wait of 25 mins in the scorching heat just for brunch at Cafe Madras.....the guy out there probably the owner calls ur name so loud that u r definitely in the limelight.....Cramped place but mumbaikars adjust anywhere......Butter IDLI Podi to start with lip smacking......Thuppa Masala Dosa was soft n delicious.....last but not the least filter caffi which i was waiting for since long....typical south indian blended caffi.......the place is worth...Patience gives u good food keep chanting while u r waiting outside.....
Bang on the circle in Matunga you will find Cafe Mysore. Simple, unpretentious eatery that serves delicious south indian fare. You cannot go wrong with the dosas, vadas, idlis there.Pineapple sheera and idli molga pudi are absolute delight here.Khoto Idli which is given steamed in a jackfruit leafis a speciality to be tried out .the sambar here is very tasty and you get in abundance.
Cafe Madras is the best south Indian restaurant among many youngster and friends outside mumbai city... its ambience is ok. It is not so costly. Its idli and upama are very good. It is always crowded. Sunday morning people come here for Break fast. Its starts from morning till night place is not so hygienic but people enjoys its food. Dont miss the coffee!
Cafe Madras is one of my favorite place. Have been eating here since my childhood. Masala dosa is very crisp to eat and the chutney is delicious along with mouth watering sambar.
this is a little bit far from my home but I come here often because the food is so good here! I love the Neer Dosa and Ragi dosa and never have it anywhere else. Medu Vada, Rasam Vada, pineapple Sheera and Filter Coffee are also must have here and the best part is it is so easy on pocket even a small child can afford it all in pocket money! Especially the chutneys are so good I have to mention them! Try the Mulga Podi chutney which is the best!
Café Madras is an institution and one of the most famous places and my most fav place for south Indian food. Food here is not like served at restaurants.it is very homely as if a grandmother prepared it for you! Very simple place with tables and benches kind of set up,always crowded and in evenings you have to wait to get it! Idli, vada-both with rasam are exceptional. Also try the Neer dosa which is simply the best ever! Very healthy and tasty Ragi dosa is amazing too and ofcourse end it with filter coffee which will make you wanna stay here only forever!
Loved loved the dosa here! If you are someone who loves the dosa this place is a must try! The pineapple sheera is also very delicious and kinda melts in your mouth! Reasonably priced and decent service.
Café Madras is an institution in itself for South Indian food in the city. Very little can be said about the place that has not already been said. It is strictly a no-frills eatery (read sparse wooden tables and benches tightly squeezed into a small place at Matunga) with good food and quick service being the USP of the place. My favorite here and probably their best seller is Idli Podi with White Butter. This heavenly combo of soft steaming Idlis served with coconut chutney, homemade butter and a generous sprinkling of mulgapodi (that fiery spice mix, also known as gunpowder) is not something one would want to share - so better to order an individual plate for all. Another brilliant dish on the menu is their Rasam. This can be had with Idlis also but I prefer it with their wonderfully fried Vadas. Well spiced and balanced, it is a perfect comfort food one can have here. They serve a variety of Dosas (many of which are not found on menus elsewhere in the city), all of which I have found to be crisp and tasty. The Pesarettu Dosa deserves a special mention. A slightly thick dosa made of moong lentils enclosing a spicy onion mix, it scores both on texture and taste. Ragi Dosa is another good and unique option. Their creamy and silky stew goes well with both Neer Dosa and Steamed Rice. This is one dish which is not always available and one can get it only with some luck. For dessert the Panpoli, a Sheera like mix with oodles of nuts, raisins and coconut flakes steamed in banana leaves, is good on taste though a bit heavy on the stomach but better to share the same. The service here is extremely quick. Being a no-frills place, its very easy on the wallet. In simple words, a fab place where food does all the talking.
Must Go place atleast ONCE for south indian dishes
Cafe Madras...for all the south Indian food lovers like me...this name cant really go unnoticed here in Mumbai. I Have been there as heard a lot about it...since this 71-year-old Matunga home, has the most authentic Tamilian food. The food is nice and really an authentic one, with a nice aroma and taste. Also the dishes are served with home-made White butter which is an added thing specially if you from south :) only the disappointing thing is that have to be patient enough to able to get a seat inside..And also the waiters might shoot you down with their suggestions about the dishes what you should have ..(without even been asked for.) , thats nice too an extent but not always :) so All in All its nice place to enjoy south Indian cuisine provided you have enough time to wait outside the hotel to get a place inside.
If you ever crave South Indian Food, Cafe Madras is that one place where you will definitely get your dose of south Indian dishes. The butter Idilis OMG.. are to die for. They are so soft and it literally melts in your mouth. This place is jam packed most of the times, so you have to wait for atleast 15-20 minutes before you get a seat. However if you do get a seat, the waiters will still give you enough time to let you decided on your food and even once your done, they will never be in a hurry to push you off for other to take your seat, they are kind enough and treat all customers with respect.
This place is for those longing for some good quality and authentic south indian food. The dosas idlis and every other south indian dish is a must-have! The place is great for a quick bite and not very expensive. The mysore dosa is great as well! You must end your food with a glass of buttermilk from here!
Great south Indian food, if you need help what to order, the owner gladly comes to your table to recommend you a selection of food. But mind you ( their specialty dosas are soaked in white butter which makes it so Yummy)) One must end their meal with their Pineapple halwa and Filter coffee. Mumbai's most authentic south Indian food till date.
Cafe Madras is one of the oldest places in Mumbai that serves authentic South Indian food. One of its main qualities is that they have strived to maintain their authenticity, not just food-wise, but even ambience wise. They still use the same kind of silverware and have the same kind of furniture. Nothing has changed in the past several years at Cafe Madras, Matunga. That being said, things have changed. Cafe Madras has become commercialized and they have greatly reduced their quantity of food served as well as increased their prices. The size of the Idli has actually been halved. But if price is no matter for you, then I definitely recommend Cafe Madras as the taste is still the same, its totally yumm!!!!!!
This place is no longer what it used to be like in the earlier days..the idlis are not very soft now..but it still serves one of the best sambhars in matunga..the onion rawa dosa is good here..the place is very average and grabbing a table near the fans is a good idea..the waiting here on Sundays is long..
As a South-Indian Food Snob, and going insane trying to find something close to what and an Idli, Dosa, & Sambhar should taste like... this place definitely is the best there is in this neck of the woods. I love going here for weekend breakfast. There is always a 15-20 minute wait, and once you get a table, you will often find yourself sharing a table with other patrons. If this is a problem, then I suggest you don't go there, but you'd also be giving up an opportunity to taste some of the most delicious south Indian food on this side of the world! Absolutely love this place!
The only South Indian joint in Mumbai that opens at 7.00 am.the idlis are mind blowing nice hot steaming idli with sambhar ,I like my sambhar poured over the idli. Rawa dosa , dosa, upma, uttapam u name it they have it the coffee is outstanding. Ginger lemon is also very good, an ordinary looking place but outstanding mouth watering food
Cafe Madras, as it name aptly suggests serves real good south indian fare. It is one of the few joints in matunga and is certainly a saving grace when you want to eat quick yummy food.
I would really recommend the Sambar & the chutney more than anything on the menu. The sambar especially is absolutely lip smacking *slurp* !!! Try everything on the menu - you will be bowled over by the food.
The place, especially its rasam vada came highly recommended. So off we went one Sunday morning to check it out. If going on a weekend, be prepared to join the queue waiting for a table. If you are two, more often than not, you might end up sharing your table with two others. So there is no "dining experience" or "breakfast over a lengthy conversation" as such, the focus being just on eating the yummy food. Try the dosas, pesarettu which is not commonly served at other south Indian eateries and of course the rasam vada. The place is a landmark due to the kind of food they serve. The food here does justice to the awards and accolades Cafe Madras has won year after year. Do drop in for a yummy south Indian breakfast.
I have visited this place since my childhood and can assure you all that it is 1 of the best south indian eatery in mumbai. Idli, Wada, dosas and upma all are real nice. The main difference between this eatery and other south indian eatery is that they serve the mysore dosa pasted with the regular coconut chutney whereas most other places serve it with the red garlic chutney. The sambhar served is not sweet as is the practice in the suburban areas. Weekends will be really crowded. Rest everything is really superb
Always a pleasure to visit Cafe Madras. One of my favourites for weekend brunches, the place is crowded and lacks ambiance, but the food more than makes it up for it.
Have been visiting it regularly and plan to do so in the future too! :)
Go here for the Idli, Medu Wada, Dosas like sada dosa, mysore dosa, etc. I love their sambar as well (very few places in Matunga that still serve Sambar with onions.)
And do not forget to end your meal with a cup or two of steaming hot strong filter coffee!
(Be prepared to wait for a long time over weekends, as it seems the entire city comes to Matunga for their fix of Idli and Dosa)
Words cannot do justice to this place, which is like the Mecca of south indian food in mumbai. The idlis are so perfect that they almost melt in your mouth. The Mysore Sada dosa should be patented by them. Its so yummy that you need to eat it to believe it. This is one of the few places where you can order anything on the menu and not worry about being disappointed. And the owner-brother duo are the most sweetest people you will meet. Its a place you should visit atleast once a month to enjoy delicious south indian. With filter coffee to boost
Who does not know Madras Cafe if you live in Mumbai? the food is really good and is extremely clean. it is really sad to see lot of unhygienic street stalls charging much more than these restaurants. also good to see that restaurants like these have maintained their standards. another point is that their service is also good at all times. never have i noticed the evening spoilt because of poor service despite the crowds.Malga podi idli, pessarate are their al time favourites. you also see the owners talk nicely with the customers depsite the huge crowds
I am a regular at Café Madras. What makes café madras special to me is its simplicity; simplicity in ambiance, food and the staff. The food is authentically Madras/Chenna in its taste and flavor. My personal favorites are the rasam vada n pessarttu. However, if one is planning to go for dinner, they must ensure that they reach before 7:30pm as most of the stuff gets consumed and you are left with few options to choose from then! You also see the owners mingle with their guests at times and suggest food items, which makes this place friendly :)
if you like southIndian food, DO NOT miss any chance to visit this place. Weekends usually have long waiting. but every bite is worth the minutes you spend on road waiting.. they dont have an AC section, but food more than makes up for it. whatever you eat, is a treat. but some of my favourites include, set dosa, moong dal dosa, pineapple sheera, neer dosa, curd rice, and mysore dosa. and two cups of filter coffee after the meal. you are bound to get in overeating mode once you enter this place... a little crowded, but dont we live in a country with a billion people.. :) only pain is to drive back with a full stomach..
Have been going to this place for more than a decade now - what it lacks in ambience it more than makes up for the food - everything you order in this place is just amazing but the steamed idlis and the butter plain dosa takes the cake - great family place and the pricing too is just amazing !
The place is definitely different than most South Indian joints in Mumbai, but it still lacks the taste and authenticity that you find down south... also the place is overrated and hyped as a lot of places in Mumbai! as always the South Indian food is restricted to very Udipi/Manglorean tastes... something I haven't really enjoyed... my sambar and chutney have to be spicy, loaded with flavour... Having said this, the idli butter pudi, raagi dosa and the filter coffee (a milder version) deserve a special mention... the idli butter podi in particular melts in your mouth... Being a true blue Chennaiite, the taste is very different from what you get even at the smallest of joints there... and so are the variety... It's sad to know that a place like Mumbai which has everything from India and abroad in plenty, doesnt have a good South Indian restaurant which serves Tamil/ Andhra/Kerala food as authentic as it can get!
Started with the rasam vada-which was rasam served with vada....such small vadas were served and the rasam being average in taste...then came in the ragi dosa-the star of the lunch-superb!!!! easily the best ragi dosa i have eaten ever, the sambhar and chutney served with it were less in quantity!--then came in the pineapple sheera which was sad!,ended the meal with the filter coffee which was at home temperature!!!!!!,taste was satisfactory though-after i finished,i ordered for another one and it was not available, service was pathetic, there is nothing such as an ambience here, you may have to share tables as well. And they dont even know their mathematics-they calculate on their own, make mistakes, thus be careful of being charged extra....this happened with me...i made him then calculate.Food is very reasonably priced though.
I tried cafe madras as a part of a Matunga breakfast trail I had organized along with my friends and we ended up eating in around 10 places in Matunga but the Steamed idli with white butter from Cafe Madras stood out!! it was melt in the mouth and heavenly delicious!! and enjoy this idli with some pudi (south indian masala). Yumm!!!
visited this place after reading all the reviews on burrp. and let me tell you all i wasnt disappointed at all it had delicious south indian food i ever had and at such an economical rate i couldnt try pineapple sheera as they didnt have it. i have a reason to visit the place again :-) its damn crowded on sunday so you better be ready to wait at least for 30 mins!!
