First of all, I would like to thank Burrp for giving me the space to express myself.
Mainland china reminds me of my voyage for the chinese food.
Chinese food, as i remember started for me when i was about 7/8 years old. My father got Chicken Manchurian parceled from a restaurant in Chembur. Alas! my taste buds had the first experience of Chinese food. My heart still slurps when i am reminded of my first experience. My sister and I finished up the whole chicken manchurian, hardly anything left for my parents.
After that I have tasted chinese food at tapris, other restaurants and my college canteen.
At chinese tapri, one near Mankhurd station has been my favorite spot that enjoyed with my friends during the school days.
In college. the chinese food story is same everywhere, you get cheap and awfully prepared chinese food. Still you like to eat it because it gets served quickly and in the end you express your anger with your friends for the canteen anna.
Come 2010, I saw the commercial of Mainland China, where the guy in the restaurant rushes to kiss the Chef for the tasty chinese meal he was served.
Heard it from my friends the food is just ok but the place is costly.
Still I had this in mind, the place would be an ideal space to have some really good chinese meal.
7th April 2011, my friends from the college decided to meet at Powai because everyone is busy with their jobs and we hardly get time to meet. On top of it my birthday party was pending and even one of my friend became a mama. So it was great day to meet and have party with your pals.
We decided to go to Mainland China, I withdrew 2500 bucks from the ATM coz I knew the place will be costly, informed my parents not to make dinner for me as I will be coming late and all my friends were excited to have some good food.
Six of us entered Mainland China, an ambience that makes you feel that you are going to have some real good food and enjoy the evening. The first thing we had discussion was to have soup or not coz of the high price or just go ahead with normal starters and main course. But then mood was good, we or ordered 1 soup, 3 pints beer, 4 starters and we were also served chinese tea. Till now we really liked the soup that was tasted by all 6 of us, while starters were also ok and beer as usual was pretty good :). By now 1 of my friend had became pissed of the food but others still thought the main course will be nice.
We then had a 10 min long discussion and then ordered the main course. It was 2 large singapore noodles (1 veg n 1 non veg), 2 regular fried rice (again 1 veg n 1 non veg), chicken manchurian n 1 veg gravy (don't remember the name.)
Clean plates were kept and we all were ready to give delight to our taste buds. First we tasted Singapore Noodles, the noodle were like vermicelli same as that you get in Apna Bazaar under the brand name Bambino, awful taste and began the horrible journey of my chinese food. The rice served were also of poor quality, when you are paying 400 bucks for rice you expect some better quality food but it was just in my imagination, reality had some awful food for me. Chicken manchurian was just like any other that you get served in a restaurant.
In the end what I experienced was awful, highly priced, no value for money chinese food. Service was also poor as the waiters used to interrupt for serving food while the plates were full and also we waited for more than 20 minutes just to get that bloody 4000 rupees bill.
It's all show no quality in Mainland China, only ambiance is the good part over here.
Outside we cursed Mainland china in as many ways as we can. The best one was "just keep replace u with one of the a's in Mainland China".
It's better i have chinese food served in a tapri rather than again going to Mainland China to have my pockets empty with horrific food experience.
