Good

Great Malwani Food

Satkar Rice Plate House is located bang outside Goregaon Station on the East.

The entrance to the place is burried amidst small shops, but just ask anybody around and they'll guide you.

Satkar has been around since the late 40's and serves authentic Malwani cuisine.

On offer is:
Fish Thali - choice of fried fish and curried, 2 chapatis, rice, sol kadhi.
Mutton Thali - sukkha mutton, patal mutton, 2 chapatis, rice, sol kadhi.
Chicken thali, sukkha chicken, 2 chapatis, rice, sol kadhi.

One can also order a la carte - and the non veg menu is exhaustive - a variety of fried and curied fish, prawns, kurlya(crabs), teesrya, kalwe.

Rice bhakri is available daily, while Malwani wades are on offer only on Fridays.

For vegetarians, theres an amti, ussal and bhaji - which changes daily.

Satkar has recently added an A/c section. On any day other than Tuesdays, the place is packed at lunch time and one has to wait in line. Be prepared to share your table with strangers. There's no fancy lighting or decor. The service is fast and efficient.

Over all good cheap Malwani food.

One of the oldest Quarter joints around

Gokul Lunch home is located in a lane just behind the Taj. Its in the same lane as Bade Miyan and Bagdadi.

A long time ago it used to have some absolutely great music playing, courtsey the foreign sailors on shore leave who used to patronize it.

Earlier there was huge open non ac space on the ground floor, and also a first floor, that was strictly NO-No if you were 5' 8" +. Besides this there also was an ac section.

Used to be a fav with the ad and journo crowd - and still probably is.
No problem taking women friends here, unless they are the La Di Dha types.

Today Gokul has three distinct sections.

Two Non A/C: -
On the ground floor and another one on the mezzanine on the top right. Booze is by the quarter. Avoid taking your love interest here.

A/C (Non smoking):- Guess this is a new style. This section is also on the mezzanine, but on the top left - ie opposite the non A/c. Quarters available her, but at a slight premium, considering that there is no stale cigarette smoke hanging in the air.

A/C:- This is on the ground floor, in the interiors. No quarters here (but once upon a time it was different). Booze is by the peg. And yes you can puff away to your hearst content.

Chakna is anything fishy. Avoid dinner. Suggest you hooch here and pig out at either Bade Miyan or Bagdadi.

Janata Lunch Home - Pali Naka

Bang at Pali Nakak. Janata Lunch home has seen my patronage since a long time. Of course, booze is by the quarter.

As you enter, there are a couppla tables on the ground floor, immediately after the galla, plus some more tables further inside. Thats all non AC.

By means of a narrow staircase you reach the first/mezzanine floor - thats AC. Beyond this is a larger AC space, open only after 8 pm....wimmin frnds are welcome here.

You are bound to end up making friends with other patrons...especially on weekends....as the place is packed.

Be prepared to share your table with others.

Food is average Manglorean.

Open till late. Don't be surprised if you exit out of Pali village - definitely not the way you entered it.
