Bombay Dyeing Mills Compound, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, Worli, Mumbai

Good

Absolutely Fabulous, Darling

You walk into Shiro through a 15 foot high door (no exageration) and into what looks like a oriental meditation garden. The walls are stone, the high ceiling bamboo and the central area is dominated by a huge statue of a Japenese Princess whose vase trickles water into a pond full of lillies below. It certainly had that immediate wow factor.
We were shown quickly to our table and provided with menus, well two menus for a table of six. Anyway we ordered drinks and starters and whilst the drinks were rather slow coming (considering there are at least three bars) they were good when they arrived (cosmopolitans, bloody mary) and the starters where not far behind.
We shared prawn tempura served with a hot and sweet broth, chicken manchurian, chilli potatoes and tofo and shitake tempura in a creamy spicy sauce. All were very good, of more than adequate size and served in very pretty dishes. Chilli was a main ingredient of each ( but it always is in Indian/Oriental food) but they each managed to maintain their individual flavours. Only complaint was that we had to ask for our portion of prawn tempura three times and then the waiter blamed us for the mix up!
Main courses were prawns in hot bean, a lovely dry, sauce free dish that left the prawns crisp and tasty; prawn red thai curry which was gorgeous, packed with fresh lime leaves and just the right amount of spice; chicken with mushrooms which was a rich and succulent dish; tofu caserole which I was assured was very good and glass noodle salad which was the only dissapointment - too much vinegar.
Too full for dessert we took our drinks and stood by the large bar area, checking out the "beautiful people" who had by this time filled the place to capacity.
While perhaps expensive by Mumbai standards (5 people for food and alcohol was 8000) certainly the atmosphere and food was well worth it, and certainly much less than you would pay in somewhere like the Taj or Henry Jones. The attention to asthetic detail was good, the glasses gorgeous and the vegetable flowers on each dish very pretty.
Sharpen up a somewhat niave service strategy and this place would have got 5/5. We will be back.

Express Towers, First Floor, Ramnath Goenka Marg, Nariman Point, Mumbai

Good

Thai me up

This brand new restaurant based in the Express Towers is an instant winner. Serving Thai and Chinese food it has a large and varied menu with lots of favorites and some new dishes.
The decor was crisp with wooden floors and white table linen. Some tables are screened with muslin curtains and the differing levels of seating helps it to feel intimate.
The mushroom salad was spicy and substantial, the fried smoked chicken crisp and, well smokey and the thai beef salad packed with with citrus and lemongrass flavours.
The main courses were spicy and pungent with many layers of fresh ginger, garlic, nam plah and lime. The vegetable hakka noodles particularly flavoursome.
A table of 28 was served without delay. And the barman does a mean martini - dirty as well as classic!
Overall a great addition to the Mumbai dining scene.

H2O Water Complex, Next to Mafatlal Swimming Pool, Chowpatty, Girgaum, Mumbai

Good

Location, location, location

I honestly couldn't believe I hadn't reviewed this place. Having been several times in varying guises; dinner for two with a special someone, half a dozen friends for an informal meal and a big work night out.
Without the location the Salt Water Grill wouldn't last a week. The food is good, but not good enough for the competition that it has in Mumbai, but throw in lapping waves, a salty tang in the air, sand underfoot and sprinkling of palm trees and you have a little oasis amongst the mayhem.
I have never had a truely great starter at SWG but the carpaccio is not bad and the pate with melba toast is crisp and tasty. In the main courses the risotto is king here. The tomato and marscapone rich and thick, the roast garlic with squid had a real depth of flavour, even the beef and mushroom - which should be all wrong, manages to impress. The steaks I hear are not bad too!
If you have room for desert the flourless torte is one of the best I have ever had.
Regarding the loss of the liquor licence - I think we should all have a minutes silent prayer to get this back. It was the one of the few places you could get a decent martini in Mumbai. However needs a backhander to get this done, please make yourself known.

Intercontinental Marine Drive, 135 Netaji Subhash Road, Marine Drive, Mumbai

Good

Go for the ambience

Sitting high up above Marine Drive the Dome is a gorgeous place to chill out. Large white sofas, low tables, oil burners add to the relaxed atmosphere. The drinks menu is reasonably long if not reasonably priced, but this isn't an every day bar. Its a special occasion, date, birthday place.
Its not the place to come to eat though. The tepenyaki and sushi is only average and at the price they charge, not good value for money. The crab tasted tinned and the sushi rice did not appear to be the real deal. It also has the tamest wasabi I have ever come across!
Go to see and be seen, its what its best at.

The Ambassador Hotel, VN Road, Churchgate, Mumbai

Poor

Spin right past this place

The revolving restaurant idea is cool (not like the CN tower cool or anything) and gives good views of downtown Mumbai. Its really the only reason for coming here.
Service is slow and then overly fussy ( silver service does not equal good service), drinks and menus took an age to come. Menus are long and too complicated with Japanese, thai and various varieties of Chinese cuisine. Unless you know your way around the sorts of food on offer it would be difficult to put a good menu together. Not that in the end that it would really matter. It was difficult to distinguish between the bland dishes apart from the colour and the degree of spice. There was no subtlty of flavour, no textures to challenge your tastebuds, no attempt at authenticity or creativity. even the fried rice lacked oomph.
Needless to say we passed on desert.
