155 Waterfield Road, Waterfield Road, Bandra (W), Mumbai

Average

Good decor, not much else

Structurally pretty much the same as the layout in China Gate (i think), it has a spanking red modernist decor that makes the place look attractive for a yuppy time out.

But apart from that, I think the place (like most other places) survives purely on the fact that most of us are not really very discerning when it comes to judging restaurants and just need places to 'eat out'.

There is a giggling maitre-d', slow waiters who do not top up water glasses or even present the right menu at the right time (the drinks menu arrived after the order was placed!), and you seriously have doubts about the place knowing its food when you have typos in the menu ('Baerly' for Barley, 'Worldrof' for Waldorf)!

Good

Very good food, but great?

We had a very good meal for two with a sushi platter, one tempura, one cha-soba and one sea bass teppanyaki.

As far as Japanese food goes, this place is definitely one of the best around with the freshest of ingredients that are apparently flown in everyday from around the world.

The prices are what you would probably expect in a top notch Taj restaurant. But I suspect that what you're getting in return for the price is just the Taj brand and the fact that the ingredients are being flown in. The restaurant is actually called 'Wasabi by Morimoto', Morimoto being a celebrity chef who's even run a TV show - but I didn't think the food had any of that 'celebrity chef' touch to it. In fact, I'm beginning to suspect that it's the best only by default - that the other restaurants are a notch lower simply because of the difficulty in managing ingredients related to Japanese food.

The restaurant itself was a touch cramped and a bit 'pop'. There's something off with their seating plan though... when we called ahead to reserve a table, we were told that only the teppanyaki counter was available and that everywhere else was booked through for the night. But pretty soon after we were seated, we could see two good empty tables, and a lot of seats by the sushi counter. Maybe they reserve them just in case a Mumbai celeb rushes in unannounced!

The service from the waiters was also not exactly expected from that of top notch international hotels. Frankly, it seemed the same as what you would expect in a standard fine dining restaurant. I've seen better service in Taj Coromandel, Chennai, so am sure this is not the standard expected by Taj.

Definitely something to do at least once in your lifetime, but don't expect a major extravaganza, and you'll be fine. You'll know what a Wasabi actually looks like, you'll admire the energy and the skill of the teppanyaki chef, and you'll get some good Japanese fare. Oh, and save up for the visit.

Museum Inn, 1 Museum Road, Museum Road, Bangalore

Poor

Bad Valet service

We were all excited to go check out the buffet yesterday, but we couldn't even enter the premises as we were left waiting for a valet for over 30 minutes, and that too, with two cars ahead of us waiting for a valet too!

Now it's all fair about the fact that there is extreme congestion, valets are busy trying to find parking space, but to offer valet service AND display perfect apathy to the situation, show no concern or understanding about the frustration and even looking grumpy is just not on. We left and went on to Sikander (thank god for parking space), but frankly, even if we had got lucky and got parking soon enough at Angeethi, the food would just not have been palatable.
