My question: Why does a specialty Chinese Restaurant share a door with a Specialty Indian Restaurant (Kebabs & Curries), where to reach the Chinese restaurant you have to walk right next to the open tandoor kitchen which has a mouthwatering display of kebabs?????? Right way to tickle the palate for a chinese meal?? I think NOT!
The ambience: Competent enough to justify a Five Star Hotels Specialty Restaurant. As soon as we sat down we noticed the table was wobbling. I believe one of the things you do when setting up the restaurant for service is to check if the tables are leveled & not wobbling...major slip from the supervisors.
I also noticed that the the wodden chairs did not have a cushioned back rest. It was Ok initially, but as we finished our soup, it started getting uncomfortable.
The service: Absolutely average. After the wobbly table slip up, we turned our attention to the menu cards. We were given a regular food menu and a special festival menu. I felt that the festival menu was a forced attempt at conjuring something to join the mandatory celebrations in our city restaurants for the Chinese New Year. The special menu for some reason did not have descriptions of the menu items. I remember a dish called 'something and numb prawns'. For heavens sake, I dont think I can order something called that and with no explanation of the dish given....No way....
Since we were there to celebrate a friends birthday, we decided to turn our attention to the drinks menu. After all what is a celebration without drinks......Lo and behold we noticed we were not given the drinks menu. Now if you look at me and my friends, I can assure you we give away no indications that we abstain from anything...leave alone alcohol.....But the service staff seemed to have formed that conclusion. We had to try for a good 5 minutes to get the attention of the service staff to notice us and give us the drinks menu.
The service of food and drinks was very speedy though. I was impressed.
The Food: We ordered Soup (Crab meat, Bean curd & Egg drop soup) which was quite nice but a little bland in flavours for my taste. Our starters included dimsums and spare ribs (noticed that the spare ribs were served off the bone). The dimsums were not at all good and my friend's wife who usually would fight for the last piece, very diplomatically offered it to her husband. It has a slimy skin and the chicken filling smelled and tasted a bit funny.
The main course options were quite good. We had a chicken with black pepper in some sauce and pomfret in some chilli sauce with chilli powder. The pomfret was fresh and the sauce very flavourful.
We had a mixed fried rice which was quite OK.
The best part of the meal was the dessert. The chocolate mud pie with chocolate fudge sauce and jujubs was outstanding. The portion size was huge and the pie was the goooooiest that I had ever had. Excellent. But not Chinese though.
The bill came to almost 8000/- for three people with just two small drinks which I felt was quite a lot. The food really does not justify the price as it can be compared to the food at China Garden or Mainland China at 1/3rd the prices.
I am not sure if I will be back for the Chinese food but will be back for the delicious looking kebabs at Kebabs and Curries.

Good
Been to this newish restaurant a few times now as it is quite close to office. Must try items here include Machli Tikka (quite spicy & juicy), Fried Bombay Duck (crispy)Indian gravy items such as Butter Chicken & Chinese Fried Rice. Decent service and good ambience. They have a Bar as well serving the usual drinks. The place is well frequented by office goers in the Prabhadevi area for lunch. Good place to drop into if you happen to be nearby.
