Good

A good veg restaurant

This place was \nice. I'm usually anti-veg anything, but I thought the food here was very good and I didn't miss meat at all. I got the thali, which had a nice range of different tastes and was a good value. I wish I knew what they all were so I could say what to order, but I'd say that most things here would be pretty good.

Try the "health drinks" - different blends of fresh fruit and vegetable juices - they are really good. The one I got had pomegranate and carrot and something else, and was really tasty.

Excellent

Delicious

I went here for the Sunday brunch - it was DELICIOUS. Definitely the best meal that I've had after 5 months in India. Really expensive, but worth it.

The tapas were my favorite part. The tender beef, the spare ribs, the fresh cheeses, everything else - oh my god it was so good. The entree, fusilli with seafood, was also pretty good. But I didn't finish it so I had more room for the tapas. The dessert is great. The coffee at the end was also strangely satisfying. I ate so much that I didn't have to eat for the rest of the day.

In addition to the food, the place also has a really nice ambience. The service is GREAT. I felt a little out of place with all the rich Mumbai-ites around, but it was still nice. The live band playing inoffensive light rock also added a nice touch to the place.

If you're in Mumbai on a Sunday with an extra 2000 rupees or so to burn, this is pretty much required.

Metro House, 5-A Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, Colaba, Mumbai

Good

Awesome breakfast

I really like this restaurant. Both times I've gone to Mumbai, I've pretty much eaten here every morning for breakfast because I just couldn't find anything else as good in the Colaba area. There's always a good crowd of tourists and expats there (count the Lonely Planets).

They have a great breakfast menu - good selection, and most of the stuff is pretty good. My favorite things there are the Mondy's special with fried eggs, bacon, and sausage. The pancake roll with banana and honey is also good - I had a big appetite so I got both. The mango juice here is also good - nice and thick. Avoid the cheese garlic toast - edible, but a little funky.

One caveat is that the tables are pretty cramped to sit at. If you go in the morning when there's not a lot of people this usually isn't an issue, but I could see how it could be bad with more people all around you.

I like the cartoon characters painted on the wall - something interesting to look at while you're waiting for your food.

74, Cathedral Road, Gopalapuram, Chennai

Poor

Mediocre yet overpriced

We came in here with high expectations but were soon disappointed. Had read on the internet and heard that it was good. The decor of the restaurant is really nice, and it has a nice atmosphere, but that's pretty much the extent of the good things.

First off, there's the food. The idea of a Spanish tapas bar had me really excited because I ordinarily love tapas and was looking for some good, unique food in Chennai. They have a lot of choices, but the food just wasn't very good at all. It was edible, but just tasted so mediocre compared to other food I've had here at a fraction of the price.

The things I had were the vegetarian nachos (nothing like real nachos at all, not a lot of flavor), gernika (just tasted like tuna salad, but not good), calamari a la romana (actually cooked pretty well - nice and tender, the best thing I had there) and spaghetti with chicken sausage and creamy pepper sauce (pretty bad, on the edge of gross).

Secondly, there's the service. They get an A for trying hard, but I don't think the waiters there understand the concept of good service. When you wanted them, it was pretty hard to get their attention, but when you didn't want them, they seemed to constantly be bothering you. The constant "can I clear this plate?" was okay for the first 10 minutes, but afterwards got pretty damn annoying.

In short, the setting is nice but everything else pretty much sucks.

Church Street, OFF Brigade Road, Brigade Road, Bangalore

Poor

Okay.

This place is just okay, there's nothing very special about it. On the menu you'll find a standard mix of Indian and continental, with a little bit more seafood than usual.

I had chicken shahi and hot and sour soup. The soup was pretty good. The chicken wasn't bad. Don't get the calimari - it looks really nasty, and the person in our group who got it said it was some of the worst he's had.

They do have a few good waiters, however. I tipped pretty well.
