Favourite Books
Love Story, Kane and Abel, Moby Dick are some that serve as a blast from the past. I've forgotten so many good books, there's way too many to remember (like Enid Blyton's Noddy series! Or maybe not...at the time it seemed to rock though). in recent times, i've loved Q&A, witch of portobello and kiterunner strike me as a few recent books that i've really liked. Shantaram also struck me as a beautifully crafted novel. Right now, i'm into biographies such as iWoz
Favourite Foods
Most cuisines go down well with me (generally the ones that carnivores frequent and prefer), but I have a particular affinity for Indian, Mexican and Italian cuisines.

Small place, big on taste!

So I heard the buzz about this place and gave into it. I was of course, intrigued by the concept of being able to mix my own ingredients and concoct my own ice cream. I only just got my creative license, and what better place to use it than here?

The place itself has a decent ambience, well-lit up and woody, with this sofa running in a sort of a semi-circular space being the main seating arrangement. But the first thing that struck me about the place was the lack of adequate sitting space if the place were to be chock-a-block (which it was, given that I dropped in post-dinner). That, however, was to be my only gripe, and given that I think the amount of people there was a freakish one-off, I'd take whatever odds I might get on getting to sit next time around. But I digress.

Now, strictly speaking, these guys are a cafe cum ice cream parlor, but a cursory glance at the signs overhead show that these guys are primarily ice-cream people. There's only two small boards highlighting the coffees and other stuff, the ice-creams really were centre-stage.

And rightfully they should be too! The choices of ice-creams themselves were decent, nothing spectacularly out of the ordinary, but the fun begins if you decide to get creative (as I did!). I tried a few of the flavors (alpen butterscotch, Mocha, french vanilla and dutch chocolate) before I went with Mocha. The main attraction is the "stone" (at least I think that's what it's called). That's basically a slab where your choice of ice-cream is dumped and then your chosen ingredients are melded into the scoop of ice-cream to create the perfect medley, or something absolutely hellish, depending on your choice of condiments! I went with Oreo, a dash of gems (for the kid in me!), and some chocolate sauce for good measure. I crossed my fingers, dug in, and got hooked. Completely and totally hooked, I will definitely going back sometime soon.

For the curious cats out there, there's also praline, mint chips, cashews, almonds, 5 star, chocolate chips, choc chip cookies, some random sprinkle types and many other options to choose. Drop in, 'coz you won't regret it at the very least and at very best, you'll be back...for more!

edit: I visited the bandra joint, so that's the joint this review is based on. I gotta agree with the view expressed before me, the look is young and peppy, very feel-good

The pick of the litter

If you've been a Candies regular over the years (like I've been), there's nothing new to be said about the place that hasn't been said already...except if you're talking about Candies' latest avatar on St. Andrews road. God knows Candies could do with an expansion, and this outlet is a big, big step towards that. It is by far the biggest of the three Candies in Bandra, and (to my eyes at least), seems to be laid out much better too. Delightfully enough, the fellas over in the decision-making department decided to give the patrons some actual seating area spread over two levels, one of which is under development.

It's the same old wine in a brand new bottle, and it gets better with time. The chicken n cheese drumsticks, lasagna, chocolate milkshake and various bread rolls are all highly recommended as are the cinnamon tea cakes. Indulge and enjoy, for good things no longer come in only small packages...size does matter, and this place adds a much-needed dimension to the much-loved franchise.

bring me your hungry, your poor & i shall feed them

I had completely forgotten about this place until I read the earlier review. I can recommend this place whole-heartedly and blindly to anyone and everyone I know (or don't know, as is the case right now!)

As far as I know, I haven't had better bhurjee pav anywhere in the suburbs and this guy is really that good. I've had his tava pulav and his pav bhaji and sure, it's decent, but why would you go there for that? It's a no-brainer; the bhurjee is the star of the show, plain and simple. It's well spiced, aromatic yet not a sensory overload, and it tickles your tongue just enough with every morsel to make you want more (and more and more and more and...)

Wolf it down with its trusty sidekick, the well-buttered humble pav and you can't go wrong. i've found myself ordering the pav even after the bhurjee is over just to enjoy it. it isn't that expensive, slightly more than the normal road-side stall but not that much more expensive. (to the guys before me: i've never kept tabs on how much i've paid but i'm pretty sure it's never exceeded 40 bucks per person, extra pav included. great vfm nonetheless!)

Give it a shot, I bet you won't go away disappointed.

strike three, i'm out

normally, i'm spot on with my foodie recommendations and i had tried out this place on two separate occassions (for lunch and dinner) and on both occasions I absolutely loved the place! Their non-veg selection was quite impressive and delectable while the veggies among us did have a reasonable degree of recourse in the veg kebabs and the main course. they have this particular grilled potato that I think is fantastic and a sweetish bread that is ooh-la-la. desert spread is strictly ok, and the main course can be given a miss if the kebabs are all that interest you.

That said, I confidently recommended this place to some buddies and that was when Murphy stepped in (you know, the guy who says stuff goes wrong?). Now, while my buddies and I aren't skinflints by any stretch of the imagination, we do like value for money. I didn't get the number of the truck that hit me, but the food was only a few notched above abysmal on my previous(my third in all) and given that the main course isn't exactly a gourmet's dream, it left a bitter feeling in the mouth (bad pun not intended).

The damages worked out to about 600 bucks a head for the buffet, of which we didn't really enjoy much. Funnily, i remember the buffet being 400 odd on my previous visits. Maybe some odd caveats I failed to notice?

Why the four stars then given my dismal experience? Well, I know these guys are good, so one swallow should not a summer make. That said, I am now psychologically scarred by these guys, so I will proceed with caution before heading there.

If you do choose to head over, all the best. I hope you don't catch these guys on an off-day 'coz they really are worth it. who knows, maybe lady luck will be kinder to you...

Totally sweet

Madhuri is bang on, these guys do serve the best paani puri in bandra. Chilled, crisp, tangy and with just the right amount of sweetness that leaves you yearning for more, these guys deserve a pat on the back for titillating palates like they have for so many years and never losing their magical touch. Most of their sweets are fantastic too, but I always find myself dropping in just for the paani puri. highly recommended, even more than elco pani puri center, even though they have lots more seating and a way more extensive menu.
