Kiran, 68 Ranade Road, Shivaji Park, Dadar (W), Mumbai

Good

a New-yorker at Shivaji Park

A bigger, better Ovenfresh now is every vegetarian's fancy... Pretty much like the eateries around Chowpatty (serving their uber-rich Jain clientele), the resemblance is striking and hits you the moment you unfold the menu...

'Twas a brief business lunch this time - a middle-aged Parsi investor (gentle enough to not hurl abuses for getting his a$$ into a no-chicken no-meat joint)... I refrained from trying any fancy food... stuck to the Garlic breads, corn with tortilla soup and club sandwiches. Good food- the soup could have been served better instead of throwing itsy-bitsy pieces of corn tortilla chips in the plate. The garlic bread was simply amazing... (99.99 percentile).

You can have your choice of Mexican, Chinese, Italian and other Indian stuff... Didn't see too much of innovation, they were good at what was printed on the menu...

However, the prices were not in conformation to the location, decor and in some cases (I extrapolate here) the taste. 120 bucks for a not-too-large portion of garlic bread is taking it closer to the Hyatts... It is more expensive than Cream Centre or New-Yorker (similar cuisine) although the clientele seems slightly more conservative (Malabar Hill v/s Shivaji Park... you do the math). Nevertheless, it's a good place for some quiet time over cold coffee (no hot beverages here) and fresh bakes. Toggled between 3 stars and 4; settling on 4!

Take-away breads, pastries, light snacks (a la Gaylord's) available...

Yeoor Gaon, Yeoor Hill, Thane (W), Thane

Good

Sereeeeeene!

Yesterday was my second visit (the first one was almost 3 years ago!) to this literally exotic restaurant atop Yeoor Hills in Thane. Of all the places in Mumbai to eat, drink and make merry, this one stands tall... only for its cool, calm and imposing solitude... open-air dining... a small pond with fishes (not catch-worthy I pray!).. wooden furnishing... live classical music... and a good selection of food.

Directions: Eastern Express Highway - Toll Naka - First flyover - Left turn for Cadbury's - Straight road up - Blink-and-you-miss left for the hill

It's always a pleasant ride up the Yeoor hill... a curious leopard may just be there to greet you... the mammoth-sized mosquitoes and other unassuming crawlies invariably buzz around each corner you take... the ever-so-sweet croaking of wild, desi kermits amplified in the jungles at 2200 hrs... Moral of the story - No two wheelers and car windows up.. ALWAYS!

Now for the restaurant.. after the aura sunk in, I decided to sink myself in some chilled beer... so while the lady had a Hawaiian punch (concoction of all juices- seasonal or other) I for some strange reasons was vapouring about how lovely the evening seemed to be and how my in-laws were the most perfect set of individuals on the planet... She got it. The second 'Kingfisher Strong' was cancelled!

For starters, we (read she) ordered the boring Spring roll which turned out amazingly well-cooked... and also quite a bit on the plate too. Frankly, I don't remember much of the spring rolls but my charred tongue surely does! (am ashamed of what a beer did to me). Later, some parathas and a recommended Tava Paneer with a lavish spread of black pepper... don't remember the gravy!

But I do recollect that I read the menu (although the lights were real bad) and I think you get your regular Indian food. They have some Chinese ones too with a choice of 4-5 sauces and my sincere apologies for this handicap of not being able to name any.

Great experience... the best ambience I've seen in a modest restaurant for quite a while... the duo playing the sitar & tabla were above-average (don't know if they do any vocals or farmaish)... the food was average... but it's the whole package that makes me give it a 4 star rating... Some 800 bucks for the stuff we had...

P.S. Flouting some traffic norms, I still decided to drive the way back home... with little regards to the hills, I may have scared the sh** out of those guys on their way up... but what the heck!

Resham Bhavan, 78, Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate, Mumbai

Good

Nahi jaaoge to pachhtaoge!

Tea Centre at Resham Bhavan is nestled inside this old edifice for quite a while... so old that people have forgotten its existence. This is one place that I wish I had frequented more (Sydenham is just a lane away)... but as luck and 'money-making-pursuits' would have it, yesterday was only my third visit.

Now, I'm not a tea-drinker (3 cups including the one yesterday in this lifetime!)... but something made me try the stuff on one hot October afternoon. I have always had the ' Crunchy Cottage cheese kebabs' and this was on my wish list (and later on my plate) again... A classy open sandwich with cheese and gherkin (means 'pickled cucumber' if I've spelt it right) was indeed a treat.. The portions (kebab and sandwich) are large and beautifully served along with some great chutney.

As for the tea, I didn't mind that at all.. Going by the waiter's reccomendation, we ordered the CTC version of the Broken Orange Pekoe (au lait, of course) since I didn't fancy any exotic one... It was strong with a distinct aroma of freshness... (reminded me of the Tea Estate in Ooty.. although this was not a Nilgiri tea)... If you order for the pot tea for 2 cups you end up getting 4... (generous as I think the management is)

Other stuff - Darjeeling tea (exotic), Assam tea (strong) and Nilgiri tea (aromatic)... also available are your regular teas and a bigger selection of stuff to eat!

4 cups of quality tea, two large-portion tasty snacks and two hours of relaxed time - Rs. 250!

196, Foodcourt, Galleria Shopping Mall, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Andheri (E), Mumbai

Average

5! (Five factorial)

For the mathe-magic-ians, it's basic... for the rest -- 5! = 120 (5 X 4 X 3 X 2 X 1)... And now to decrypt this data -- This joint has 5 basic ingredients which are mixed and matched with each other making some 100+ combinations for the parathas (breads) served.

You get two parathas served with Maa ki dal (black lentils), bundi raita (yoghurt) and pickle. You can always do a half-n-half and still pay the basic price. My personal favourite there has for years been Spring Onion with cheese / paneer. The best part of the entire paratha episode is the raita which is too groovy to miss (we usually order 2-3 servings more). Other combos of great taste could be mushroom-palak (spinach), mooli (radish)-paneer, or the evergreen alu parathas.

They also serve basic punjabi gravies like the makhanwala and korma. The foodcourt, where this is located, has very uncomfortable seating arrangements with 10-12 restaurants around. Boys from each would coming running at the table even before you sit and place their menus all over... this could get quite annoying.

This is a good visit if you're around Hiranandani... not expensive at all (80 bucks for a serving of 2 parathas with extra raita or dal)... and better taste than 'Only Parathas'.. (for the combos I mentioned)...

Blessings of 'Saheb'

Hmmm... so when the owners of this establishment, after running it succesfully for decades, decided to shut shop due to poor revenues... it's most famous patron - Shri Balasaheb Thackeray thought to intervene. So after a very brief black-out, Dattatrey was open again for the junta.

There's nothing remotely good about the ambience, comfort et al about this place (compared to Chandragupt, Ovenfresh and Aaswad around)... but the authenticity of the food is what makes this a brilliant pick.

We tried 4 dishes.. all for 77 bucks! Puneri Misal, Kothmir Vadi, Thalipeeth, Batata Vada and some tea. The best of the lot - Batata Vada... Unlike most eateries and road-side stalls, the vadas here were crisp, spicy with minimum flour for the covering. The dry chutney served alongside made my day. You may also try the Kothmir Vadi for its softer taste.. It just melts in your mouth.

Dattatrey is no-no for dates, parties, celebrations and any such occasion that demands a classy and elegant atmosphere.. Come here for its traditional Maharashtrian cuisine (the vada in particular) and you may never want to have it elsewhere!
