Tunga Regency Hotel, Plot no. 37, Sector 30-A, Vashi, Navi Mumbai

Rated: Good

Great Food (and not just fish)

I have passed by this place a number of times, laughing about the name of the hotel (say it out - 'Tunga' - and dont tell me its not funny) but never thought about exploring eating options here. Specifically because the name "Something Fishy" is not visible from outside at all - only the ground floor Cafe Vihar is advertised, and that too as a pure veg place

However, we were stuck in Navi Mumbai after an IPL match and we were headed to Centre One mall in Vashi to get some dinner before catching the train home when my eyes fell on Cafe Vihar and I said - why not have some dosas here? Thank god there was a 30 min waiting and then my eyes fell on a sign board which said " Something Fishy - 1st floor". We decided to give it a try

The first thing I noticed when I entered this place was that it had a very expensive feel to it, particularly in contrast to Cafe Vihar downstairs. The ambience is all heavy drapes and solid - like an 2/3 star hotel. And the menu is quite extensive - covering Indian as well as Chinese food - and while they do have a good seafood section, there is equal amount of other meats and vegetarian food. Plus they had a Peshawari food festival going on there - which meant additional NWFP options

We decided to indulge ourselves a little and ordered a 3 course meal with soups and starters first. The veg soup I dont remember being comment-worthy but I ordered a Seafood jade soup - couldnt ever imagine a combination of seafood and spinach could taste so sharp and spicy. Great and unique taste :)

Starters were in quite BIG quantities - the chicken kalmi kebab had the biggest helpings I have seen in a bombay eatery. One bite into the food and spirits were suddenly high. Everyone ordered for drinks - good food should be accompanied by good alcohol :). Drinks were promptly served and were pretty standard

Main course was equally good and we ate so much that desserts were out of question - so cant comment on that

Service was ok though it was clear that they were a little overwhelmed by the influx of IPL fans

All in all, great food (in big helpings) and nice posh ambience gets it good marks

Lovely lunch buffet

I live in malad which is pretty far from nariman point and so I hardly visit the famous restaurants in south bombay - the hassle of getting there is not compensated by the food (mostly because most of the famous eateries have their branches in the suburbs and because a difference between a more accesible hawaiian shack and a realy far-off Cafe Mondegar is not much)
But this is one place for which we make an exception - we actually look forward to this place for our sunday lunches. That is because I havent found another place offering a similar soup/salad/sandwich buffet :) !! And the salads are just great (though I wouldnt always agree with the classification of their salads :D - herb rice salad was actually just herb rice and similarly the noodle salad was just noodles :)
But nitpicking aside, the range of salads is wide and I would say all of them were pretty yummy - I loved the chicken and the egg salad as well the okra and the mushrooms. Mention must be made of the hummus and pita bread (I am a little partial to it :) which are served alongside the bread basket and the soups. The dessert menu however, seem to have shrunk from before.

Give it a shot for your sunday morning brunch and you would love it - its worth the travel :)

Small Pub With Good Music

If I wasnt sitting right in front of the speaker system, I would probably give this pub 4/5. However that was not to be and I spent all my time there praying that I dont suffer some permanent hearing disability. Not to mention the splitting headache too
But lets put that aside - I would get a similar experience if I sat in some other pub right in front of the speakers !! Though the management could help by not putting a table right in front of the speakers and letting it be like a small dance floor or something.
The drinks served were good - couple of cocktails were quite strong and so was the hard liquor. The accompanying snacks were quite good - the crispy chilli veg especially nice. The music (they have a theme every day of the week and saturday was party music) was pretty good - good mix of classic rock and pop though the DJ went into trance electronica around midnight which kinda put me off. By 0030 hrs the DJ was starting to play hindi remixes as well but my eardrums had enough and we left the place.

The decor of the place is all wooden and 60's american - your regular pub decor. The place isnt too large - probably 10-15 tables and if you sit away from the speakers, a pleasant conversation is possible. Damages are reasonable and our party of 6 racked up 3500 on drinks. On saturday night, a lot of patrons - both at the bar as well as otherwise were breaking into a jig at the favorite numbers - which probably means they were having fun, right :) ?

Plot No 133/ A. Sector 8, Next to Sagar Vihar, Vashi, Navi Mumbai

Inconsistent

The place doesnt have the most attractive entrances - the word tacky comes to mind. And we happened to be the first people for dinner on a sunday - that was 8pm btw. A strange sight greeted us as we opened the door to the AC section - some 10 of the waiters stood in a semi circle staring at us :) !!! Havent got that kind of a welcome in any restaurant I have been :D
One thing you can avoid is the lassi - its by no means bad - infact its thick, creamy and sweet. The problem is the size - the copper tumbler that its served in holds enough for 3-4 regular glasses !!! So order carefully
The food was mixed at best. We order Khumb Paneer Bhutta something for the veggies and a Chicken Acharwala. Now as most regular eaters know, a chicken achari is a regular item on all north indian menus and is usually one of the best kababs available. However here, the kabab came all burnt, with no hint of any tanginess of any achar or anything, for that matter. Just a burnt crust of a very bland chicken. The veg starter on the other hand, was excellent. Not only was the paneer metling in the mouth, the masala has a unique flavor.
Same story at the main course - we ordered a Chicken Khurchan while wifey ordered a Tukde Paneer De. Now we normally prefer spicy food to non-spicy stuff. And even though the chicken had a spicy gravy, it was just a mish mash of spices which produced no specific flavor and ended up tasting bland
The veg on the other hand, being a little creamy, but had an excellent flavor and we ended up abandoning the chicken and finishing off the paneer. The rotis were again nothing to write about - we had ordered keema naan in which there was no taste at all of the keema - it was just coarse red powder of some kind. The masala kulcha was better.
We didnt have enough space in our stomachs to try desserts after finishing those giant lassis each. The place does have some nice touches - like the achar kept on each table. The waiter informed us that the achar was prepared by the owner's wife. And it as very different to the usual red achar found in most places - this was made of unlikely stuff like turnips, potatoes, carrots etc with a mustard base.

All in all, this place has a lot of potential - that was the best veg starter I have had in a long time. But it needs to be consistent (and reduce the size of its lassis :D )

Heavenly bengali food

The previous reviewers have described the establishment very well - I wont waste my time on that. The food is definitely on the slightly pricey side and without drinks a meal for two will set you back by Rs 800 or so. I will just point out reasons why you should check this place out

1 - For some really wonderful food - irrespective of whether you have tried bengali cuisine before. The starters are great - the highlight would be Murgi Shilong Paturi (forgive me if I didnt get the name exactly right) - its chicken generously coated with a green spicy marinade (green mangoes) and wrapped in banana leaves and fried. The succulence and the delicate flavour are to be had and then believed.
For veggies, they have a similar dish with spinach - its the next best thing after the chicken :)
I am not much of a fish person but even I couldnt help myself from licking my fingers with the Chingri Shorshay Narkol (Prawns in Mustard and Coconut). Normally you would either get Prawns in Mustard or Prawns with Coconut in Bengali menus - its the first time I have had this particular curry and mindblowing is the only word. By itself - you cant have too much of the curry - the mustard is too strong. But mixed with rice and its heavenly

2 - Very efficient and courteous staff - one the best services in bombay less than a star hotel.

Most of the tables you will find mixed ethinicities - mixed couples (one of them being bengali), or groups of friends with one or two bengalis guiding the rest. Or even if you dont know a bengali, just land there and the waiters will guide you through the menu. The only thing lacking are choices in desserts - only 5 items - and I found the 'rossogular payesh' the best

Just one thing - eat your rice with your hands - you will just enjoy it so much more :)
