Gulmohar Cross Road No.7, JVPD Scheme, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai

I tried Mangi Ferra out for the first time today. Iv been hearing tonnes of good things about it with quite a few people saying its the best Italian restaurant in Mumbai. I always wanted to know if it was as good as my current favourite Italian restaurant in Mumbai - Don Giovanni.. The entrance looks really nice with a tree just before the door which adds a nice touch to the place. The place was done up well and even had a section with a nice couch for a couple of drinks or something but somehow the place lacked class. The menu didnt really have too many non vegetarian dishes to chose from and there were definatly more vegetarian dishes than non vegetarian - not a good sign. They had a woodfired oven and so I had to try their pizza. I could definatly taste the flavour added by this oven but somehow the pizza was just not upto the mark. I hope I am not being a snob about this but the pizza seemed like it had been Indianized and lacked the authenticity and taste of Don Giovanni. The menu didnt have too many options for toppings, with chicken, ham, peperoni and sea food being the only non vegetarian options. The quality of meat isnt anywhere close to Don Giovani even though the pizzas cost roughly the same amount. My friend ordered a pasta which again really dissapointed me - not authentic enough. The service is about OK and the waiters are polite and the service was quicker than Don Giovanni for sure. However the waiters dont know much about the food and you have to kind of figure out everything for yourself. The restaurant is as expensive as Don Giovanni which IMO is much better value with more authentic and better quality dishes. Overall Don Giovanni 1 Mangi Ferra 0. I always suspected that Mangi Ferra was another one of those overhyped places that has this buzz about it but the food isnt as good as you would expect it to be. I guess I was right.

Uhhhh What a shady place. I went to Uturn with a bunch of frineds and must say I was really dissapointed. Its really hard to find and is on the terrace of a really dicey looking hotel. No point writing a long review for a place like this but the crowd was really shit in the outdoors section, the hookah was just about passable, the kababs were ok and they had Karaoke night with some reallllly old songs being played. Besides the place was so crowded that getting service was impossible. Overally avoid Uturn - its just another place trying to hop onto the Hookah bandwagon and there are a tonne of other hookah joints out there that rape this place.

Bread Talk is part of a Singapore based chain and I believe they have branches all over the world. Bread talk is the pefect addition to Powai that to be honest is really starved of good restaurants. Bread Talk isnt located in the middle of Hiranadani(which is a good thing) and is at the end of a lane and can be easily missed if you dont know about the place. The interiors are open and bright giving a nice roomey feel to the whole restaurant. The open kitchen adds to the space and its an added bonus when you can see them playing with the icing and making all your food fresh. Bread Talk has about 4 tables but this isnt really a problem as about 70-80% of customers order takeout. The restaurant is based on teh self serve model which in this case works really well. Theres a counter where all the food is kept and you pick up whatever you want onto a tray and pay when your done. The only negative aspect about this is that some people dont use the tongs and touch the food with their hands which really grosses me out. Comming to the food. Its nothing fancy just a couple of puffs, rolls and croissants. They have a butter chicken puff, a smoked white chicken puff a pizza puff and kheema puff all of which are delicious. Their chocolate croissants are pretty good too. Their selection is pretty good and everything is above average. They also have a sandwhich bad but to be honest Id reccomend you stick to the puffs. Their desert section is pretty limited though they do have a decent mango and strawberry mousse. Other thigns that breadtalk offers is a variety of breads including multigrain and french bread. The service here is pretty good. Nothing overly impressive considering the limited role they play. Overall I welcome bread talk as a welcome change from Birdys and is sometihng that Powai really needed.

Indigo is recognized as the best restaurant in Mumbai if not the best restaurant in India. This is a pretty big deal and puts a lot of pressure on the restaurant. Indigo is owned by Rahul Akerkar who also started up Under the Over(RIP Under the Over) which was one of the most popular restaurants of its time. Indigo is located in a lane behind the Taj. Its the same lane as cotton world and to be honest the lane is really shady. But once you get near Indigo things get a little better. The restaurant is located in an old bungalow. The restaurant occupies the whole bungalow and as a result has a lot of space that it can play around with. The whoel idea of the restaurant in a bungalow is really genius and IMO looks awesome. The interiors are really simple but still extremely classy. When you enter you can see the bar with a couple of low tables. The dining areas are located on the left and right. Overall the ambience is perfect. Nothing fancy and yet at the same time very appealing. Comming to the service. The service here is good but I wouldnt say its outstanding. The waiters were able to reccomend items off the menu but you could tell that they dont really understand the menu that well or probably arent really that passionate about the food. The service however is polite and so thats a good tihng. The food doesnt take too long to arrive which again is a good thing. Comming to the food.Iv never eaten about 15% of what was on the Indigo menu and to me that shows that this restaurant is really out there offering the city exotic foods which is a huge huge bonus. I had a Lobster Bisque which was really good. Nothing really that outstanding but a good soup. As for the maincourse I ordered a Lobster Risotto and my mother ordered a tandoor grilled chicken. The risotto was a bit dissapointing to be really honest but then again Im not a big Risotto fan. At this point your probably thinking that Indigo is overrated. I had a bite of the chicken and WOW!!!. The chicken was perfecltly seasoned and had a nice juice under it which complemented it perfectlly. The chicken was reallly amazing and Ill definatly reccomened it. Other than that the Desert was allright and to be honest I dont even remember what I ordered. I ordered an extra side of pinacolada ice cream that I really liked. Now comming to the damages. Each dish is about 600 and that can go up a lot considering what you order. There are some dishes with some pretty exotic ingridients that are pretty pricey. At 600 a dish Indigo is really well priced. My whole meal with a soup, maincourse and desert came to 2200 for two which really isnt bad at all. I wouldnt be so quick to add Indigo to my favourite restuanrants yet adn ill need to go there a couple more times to understand if it really is the best restaurant in India. Overall though a great restaurant and not at as expensive as some make it out to be.

Hotel Bawa Continental, Juhu Tara Road, Juhu, Mumbai
Rated: Excellent
Iv been hearing about this place for ages and finally decided to go there about a year and a half ago. Since then Iv been hooked. This place is really popular with the Italian expats in Mumbai and I guess this is due to the fact that it is really authentic. This place easily serves some of the best italian food in Mumbai. I reccomend the Pizza Ai Salami and the Beef Lasagna. The food here is authentic unlike most other restaurants where it is changed to suit the Indian Palate. Also the focus of the restaurant seems to be on the food and not on creating a buzz about itself which again is a good thing. Located opposite the Marriot in Juhu the location is pretty decent. The restaurant itslef is located in Hotel bawa that also parks your car. The interiors are allright. Nothing that really excites you. There are huge Ferrari flags which act as curtains which is pretty cool. Besides that they also have other Italian memerobilia all around. The wall is lined with wine bottles which really adds to the class of the place. Besides thats there really isnt much in terms of decor. To be honest the decor looks a bit old and good use a renovation unless the owners are going in for the old look. One thing that really hits the eye is the raw wood panneling in the wall that doesnt leave a good impression. The service here is really good. much better than most other restaurants. The waiters know the menu and are quick to jump in with suggestions and help you out. The food doesnt take too long to get to your table either which again is an added bonus. Now comming to the most important part - the food. I was really impressed with the food here. The Pizzas here are great and I doubt too many restaurants in Mumbai could come close to it. The meat used on the pizzas is top quality and I suspect the meat and cheese are imported. The base is thin but not overly crispy where you dont really get the taste of the base and its more liek eating papad. The lasagna too was great and definatly a notch above anything else available. The deserts to be honest were a little overrated and were a letdown compared to the rest of the meal. Now comming to value. The pizzas are around 400 and I believe the lasgna is around the same. Moderatly priced and good value for what it was. If they renovated the place a bit Im sure they could hike prices up by atleast 50%. Overall a great place and one of my favourite restaurants.
