55 Homeland Apts, 70 Hill Road, Bandra (W), Mumbai

Karichiwalla as everyone calls it, stood at the place today Bay City stands, about 3 years back, until they were driven off from here, as the bigger establishment opened for business. Ever since, each time I had panipuri elsewhere I would spare a sigh for Karichiwalla's pani puris. Had been told its somewhere on Hill Road, but found it finally again only a couple of days back. It's in the tiny lane bang opposite Bandra Medical Store. Can't see how I could have missed it....now that I know where it is.
The pani puri there is absolutely the best....especially if you like it really spicy, tangy and absolutely chiiiiiiiiiilled...of course they do as well with their dahi puri, sev puri, pav bhaji etc. They have loads of sweets and kulfis too. But since I don't quite favor either, can't comment on it. But I've heard that their Kulfis are really good.
But best of all is something that I'd actually forgotten about. Every time you're served or even when you pay....you also get a smile. Sure makes me feel welcome and wanted.

Though this restaurant has been around for quite a while, I kept off it as the name and front door gave me the impression that it was just a drinking whole. That changed when looking out for a seafood place that would take orders after midnight. Remembering that someone had mentioned that Maharaja serves seafood, decided to check it out. Wasn't too wrong about the drinking hole impression....but the food is yum! We ordered prawns puli munchi, bombil fry and prawns gassi with neer dosa. All of it was excellent and I went back for more thrice in quick succession within a week for more. Made sure I ordered the prawns puli munchi each time. I've been warned though by my Manglorean friends that the Puli Munchi there is not all that authentic. But what the heck I loved it. Prices are low-moderate. Though I didn't drink there, I noticed that the cost of alcohol there is ridiculously low. No wonder there were large groups of kind of leery men bonding over their drink and not too many women around. The original Maharaja is supposedly somewhere in Oshiwara, but I'm yet to check it out.

It may have other redeeming factors other than its fairly nice ambience, decor and service. But quantity, quality and taste of food are not among Wongwong's strong points. Prices ranged between Rs.150 (for tiny portion veg starters) to Rs.1800 (can't remember for which dishes). The broadest range of food was between Rs.300 - 500.
Their menus are confusing to say the least. The is a drinks menu, a starters + rice + noodles menu AND a main course menu including some other starters + rice + noodles and other dishes divided into Thai and Chinese sections. The spicy food is not marked with the standard chilli mark, but the mild food is. The redeeming point about the last, is that the steward taking the order pointed that out.
The lamb in the lamb thai rice that we ordered was tough and not fresh. Portion for the main course was just enough for one, unless both are poor eaters and tasted more like the "Indian Chinese" variety than authentic. Fried corn curd was more like pakoras!!
Can't speak for the drinks and desserts as we didn't try them. The average bill per person if you stick to the lowest cost basic stuff without drinks would be Rs.500.
Location is in prime business district but is not the kind of place you place you would choose for an office lunch with colleagues. If you are looking for a quite place to conduct a slow business meeting over lunch and don't particularly care about the food, this is the place for you.

They shut after the lunch hours and reopen at 7 pm. Home delivery is open till about 11.30 p.m. Don't know if its on till later as that only as late as I've called.
About the food....some of their food is terrific and some suck. To add to the list of good stuff, try burnt chilly lamb gravy, fortune rice (any meat), pot rice (any meat), chicken star anise. Its not a place to experiment with the menu if you don't already have a recommendation that you can trust.

I went to this place for the sheer convenience of its location for me, my impression being that it served Chinese. On closer inspection, once the car was parked I realised that they also listed Mughlai and Sheesha. As one enters, the ground floor is designed to be a sheesha lounge with the floor above that being the restaurant. The menu as advertised at their entry lists Indian (Mughlai) and Chinese food at fairly moderate prices. Ordered some Chinese....which they strangely served along with onions, lemon and green chutney. The food was more at the grade of a road side stall. What was strangest was that the decor was pretty plush,....but the service was on plastic plates!!! Spent a good part of the evening debating with my dinner partner if they may have run out of money after having done up the place. With competition from Kwik-wok, Union Park, 5 Spice, Pali Naka or even Bamboo Shoot on 16th Rd (all of whom offer much better fare at approximately the same price AND better crockery)...I wonder how long this place would last. Maybe they do better with the Indian fare...but I was disappointed enough to forget to pick up a home delivery menu to add to my favorite file for lazy days!
