34 Rest House Road, Off Bridage Road, Brigade Road, Bangalore

Poor

Those days are gone...

Time was when Pecos was the happening place for rock-and-roll (no hair bands, for that you can go to Styx) and pitchers of beer. If you were hungry it was solid standard fare, which went well with the beer.

In the past 3 years it's all gone downhill.

Pecos:

--has pretty lousy beer
--plays mediocre music too much
--has lowered the quality of their food

and...

THE PLACE IS FILTHY. Don't even look at the floor on your way in or you won't want to order anything.

Someone needs a steam-bath and a new manager, methinks.

Opposite Innovative Multiplex, Outer Ring Road, Marathahalli, Bangalore

Good

One of the best on this side of town

If you're looking for dinner/lunch on the Outer Ring Road near Marathahalli, your choices are limited.

This is a new place, and having some teething problems, but it's pretty good. It got rave reviews when it first opened -- we'll see how it holds up over time.

It's authentic Italian, so some of my Indian friends have said it's bland and boring. Some of them even put ketchup on their pizza. (the horror!) Fortunately for me the Italian chef didn't grab them by the scruff of their necks and throw them out. In Italy he might have.

Pasta dishes can be a little small in size (just like in Italy folks), but are tasty.

Pizzas are real Italian style, cooked in a home-made wood-fired oven. One pizza per person, really.

Good bread with olive-oil/vinegar is served, and the anti-pasti is/are also a good choice.

Downsides: 1) Once they were out of beer. That's not planning well.

2) They have been out of some key cheeses and meats at times. That's probably down to the importers not coming through for them.

91, 5TH Block, Near Jyothi Nivas College, Koramangala, Bangalore

Excellent

Good solid south Indian -- worth searching it out.

You would think this is an easy thing to get right but so many Udupi's and Sagar's fall short of the mark.

This one, however does it right.

Good food. Decent portion sizes. Reasonable (if a little high) prices. Friendly service.

Sit inside, sit outside. Enjoy the "sights" from nearby women's college.

And clean. I remember thinking after I left the last time "hey that place wasn't filthy like most of it's competitors." Usually I am trying not to look too closely at the floor, the walls, and the kitchens in places like this. Just eat and be happy. Udupi Krishna Bhavan is different.

#86 Spencer Building, Church Street, Bangalore

Excellent

No place like it. A favorite stop.

Nice, chic atmosphere.

Cold beer and not only Kingfisher, they have Burtons and yes, they have Belgian beers.

Rs. 60 for a Burtons and Rs. 250 for a Belgian. (In a chilled wet glass even.)

Totally friendly waiters/bartenders. Always attentive and ready with a smile. You get a fresh beer before the previous one is gone.

Food is decent, better with the beer as another reviewer pointed out. It's best to stick with the standards like burgers, rolls, chips, etc.

If only they could make this a no-horn zone on the street, it'd be perfect. The street noise is the only downer here.

78, MG Road, Bangalore

Excellent

A legend, may it always be there for us...

This is the place that you will miss when it's gone.

No, it's not the best coffee in the world.

No, it's not the best food in the world.

But just go there, sit down, and you are immediately taken back 50 years.

Close your eyes a bit until the dirt on the walls and uniforms blends into the background, and enjoy the last of the old-school Bangalore joints.

Get a coffee, some fried eggs and toast and be carried away....
