Shop No. 18, Meera CHS, Oshiwara Link Road, Oshiwara, Andheri (W), Mumbai

Good

Aye, Caramba!

Wow, the real stuff finally here in Mumbai. Well, very, very close...but a commendable effort nonetheless. Sammy Sosa has got the right type of vibe going on inside their festive little joint - Spanish movie posters on the ceiling, old Mexican/Western movie playing on a big projector screen, and great Mexican comfort music. The waiters are dressed in cute little western outfits, complete with cowboy hats and boots. The conceptualization itself is very impressive, and I give two thumbs up for the thought and effort that went into it. Now on to the food!

The food is as close to authentic as one can get on this side, and completely blows out the pseudo-Mexican you get at New Yorkers or Bombay Blues. Their stiffest competition will come from town, where Starboard inside the Taj has concocted some very authentic Mexican dishes themselves, complete with live salsa musicians, margaritas, fresh guac, etc.

I believe that Sammy Sosa has an opportunity to be even MORE authentic, look into getting refried beans, better red and green enchilada sauce (green sauce should be made of tomatillos, probably impossible to come by here, but they should try!), and have the waiter actually make the fresh guacamole at your table, as is common in Mexican restaurants abroad. Being only a week or so old, I give SS a big thumbs up. For all of us gorditas out there (look it up!), we've finally got something to look up to. Sammy Sosa, muchas gracias!

Good

New York, New York...

So there is nothing about this place that actually screams New York, apart from the mural of the Statue of Liberty against the wall, but New Yorker gets a round of applause for a good effort at trying to recreate some otherwise hard-to-find cuisines anywhere in India. Their staple/USP seems to be Mexican, as most every table had a plate of enchiladas on them. I unfortunately was in no form ready to gobble up a plate of heavy, cheesy enchiladas, but I must say, they did look as authentic as I've seen in Bombay. The place seems to be a 50/50 mix of family outings and gossipy college students.

Our table's meal consisted of a make-it-yourself pasta dish (penne with tomato sauce and some vegetables); an amritsari channa with kulcha (something like that); spicy hummus with pita (my dish); and mexican pasta salad (waaah? when did Italy and Mexico cross paths?). The pasta, I was told, tasted a bit "desi", if you will, but was otherwise enjoyable. The channa lacked salt and flavor, but the pan-fried whole green mirchi made up for it. No idea on the pasta salad, but the hummus and pita (hard to screw up) was enjoyable.

All in all, we had a good meal here, and it wasn't too hard on the pocket (some 650 odd bucks) either. If ever in this area and you're looking for a good mix of Mexican or Sizzler/wannabe Lebanese type stuff, this is your joint.

Jewel Shopping Centre, Versova, Andheri (W), Mumbai

Great potential, but...

...this place fails with its lackluster and inexperienced service. The place has the potential to be the "it" spot for the suburbs, with a great Miami-like Mediterranean theme, a fantastic outdoor area, complete with exotic foliage and serene fountains - but the mosquitoes kill! If they do something about that (and I'm not talking about those age-old coils that don't work worth a rats ass), the outdoor scene would be fabulous. The waiter was obnoxious, and upon learning that he had faltered on of our pasta dishes with the wrong sauce (alfredo cream sauce), he brought the same pasta back by just adding some tomato sauce to it - what a buffoon!

So Shatranj, if you're listening, I strongly suggest you work on these two major issues: service and mosquitoes - and you've got yourself a winner.

starbucks style cafe in juhu

By the looks of the prices my friends and I were paying, we thought we were buying Reliance shares! Now, I don't mind paying up for the nice, clean, relaxing, Starbucks-esque ambiance, but paying a 125 bucks for coffee just seemed criminal to me. The sad part is, there are so few true relaxing sit down cafes meant for a warm, inviting conversation, that I'll probably end up going back. I must say the portions are huge. When they served me my coffee, I initially mistook it for a dog bowl, but to my surprise, my cappuccino was frothing at the brim, dusted with chocolate powder. All in all, a great place to kill time, read a book with your iPod on, so you can squeeze every last paisa out of the fortune you paid for your coffee, but if you are in the market for a quick cup of java, it's not worth taking a loan out on your life insurance policy to grab a cup here.

so-so Italian fare in town

The Interconti on Marine Drive sports some pretty awesome venues - Czar Bar and the Dome itself are the pride jewels of the hotel, but I can't go as far for Corleone, their signature Italian restaurant. The ambiance is simply fantastic, what you would expect from an Italian place anywhere else in the world; classy, romantic, and cozy. The service was a bit slow and I had to order my fresh orange juice twice before it actually showed up.

The main disappointment of the night was the actual food. I can't say that anything I tried here really tasted like the hearty Italian I was expecting (and expect from every Italian joint I go to). The food was average and I guess my expectations had been built up by the pretty environment.

Also, the wine list is a bit disappointing.
